June Villain - The Alligator

Story by Robert Kahn, Art Courtesy of Todd Abbot
"I'd like to have some great story about the origin of the Alligator but sadly there isn't one", said Darryl Andrews about the history of our June Villain. "In keeping with the aquatic theme of the early Nepto issues [Killer Shark, The Sea Serpent]the Alligator was just a natural progression. He was supposed to be called the Crocodile, but I didn't know how to spell it at the time", revealed an honest Darryl.
Over the years mention of the Alligator has produced groans from the DFG staff, since there is no denying the closeness to Marvel Comic's the Lizard. Darryl responded to the 'copy-cat' criticism by simply stating, "What do you expect from a couple of twelve year olds?" The Alligator appearance history is as follows: Dan - pls have Miss. A Message from the Publisher

May 18th, 2008

Dear Fans:

As you will know, DFG Comics has recently been embroiled in a series of "creator-related" controversies with former DFG artist and staffer, Mr. Todd Abbot. The most recent controversy involved Mr. Abbot's seizing of an old DFG trade imprint (DTA Comics) and the rights to early Captain Nepto material. We at DFG planned to launch a new series, Captain Nepto Prime, set during the Silver Age of DFG (mid-late 1980's), while Mr. Abbot announced that DTA would be launching a rival Captain Nepto, Captain Nepto: The Original, set during DFG's Golden Age period (early 1980's). Things appeared to be at a stalemate, but thanks to the herculean efforts of DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, LLB, PhD, QC, KG, who acted as mediator, Mr. Abbot & DFG Comics have come to an agreement. Mr. Abbot, and Nepto creator Darryl Andrews, will be collaborating on a single new Captain Nepto series, Captain Nepto Prime, co-published under the DFG and DTA banners. However, the series will differ significantly from DFG's previously announced series of the same title, as it will be set in Cap's earliest period (the period of Mr. Abbot's series). Mr. Andrews will handle the scripting and inking chores, while Mr. Abbot will provide the pencil artwork. I am pleased to add that Flora Lovartalot will be doing the colouring. I will be personally editing the title.

This agreement has meant that the previously solicted cover cannot be used for the first issue (the costume worn by Cap on the cover is from the late silver age period, whereas the new series will feature his original costume, wig and all!). We hope to be able to use Mr. Andrew's cover art for a future issue of Spy Comics.

I wish to thank DFG fans for their patience during this controversy. I am pleased that Mr. Abbot has returned to the DFG fold, and I am especially thrilled that we will be reuniting two giants from the original Captain Nepto series to return their hero to his former glory.

Committed to bringing you "the Best in Canadian Comics,"

I remain,

Dan Graves

SPY Comics #3 -- Special Page 1 Preview!

As Spy Comics Present The Invincibles #2 (Spring Issue) will be hitting the stands in a mere number of days, DFG has decided to release this preview of Issue 3 (the Summer Issue). The story and art are by Dan Graves, with colours by Flora Lovartalot. Send us your comments and we will post them on our "Fan Page!"

May Villain - The Jester

As one of Captain Nepto's most famed adversaries, the Jester has been featured in several DFG comics throughout the years. In current continuity, the Jester is a prominent character in the "Invincibles" story line where due to a furtive manner he has assumed the Mayorship of Carnage City. Creator Darryl Andrews has said that he characterized the Jester as a cross between DC's Batman villians the Joker and the Riddler. "I wanted a prankster who was mean but not murderous like the Joker". Artist Todd Abbot claims to have created the Jester himself saying,"I created and based the Jester on Darryl's wise-cracking brother Mark". The Jester was introduced in the original Captain Nepto series in an expanded four issue appearance that was later re-edited into a two part story arc. The Jester learned Captain Nepto's secret identity by chance, as by sheer coincidence the two were neighbours in a Carnage City high rise. An unpublished story has the Jester blackmailing Nepto into retirement to protect his secret identity. The Jester poses no physical threat often equipping himself with a few bombs and a dagger. Of late, though no explanation has been given, the Jester has assumed control over Captain Nepto villian the Mummy to protect his physical weakness from Captain Nepto.

Captain Nepto Face-Off

Special to DFG Online
By Bob Barnes

With the discovery of a rough pencil outline and script of DTA Comics, "Captain Nepto the Original" surfacing in DFG Headquarters, Publisher Dan Graves was incensed to learn that the plotline was stolen directly from the DFG Comics website. "Captain Nepto the Original is everything but original", scoffed Mr. Graves as he held up the script detailing a Nepto/Jester confrontation in Nepto's apartment. "Todd Abbot stole the idea for this issue right from our advance solicitations. I've been in contact with Darryl as to how he'd like to proceed with the project". A follow-up call to Co-Publisher Mr. Andrews revealed that Darryl plans on meeting with Mr. Abbot to bury the hatchet and arrive at some agreeable situation for both parties. "I want the best for the fans" said Mr. Andrews. "As everyone is aware, I am not a fan of Mr. Abbot, but he and I will come to a solution".

F.C.B.D.

Special to DFG ONLINE!
DFG Icons Darryl Andrews & Dan Graves were visiting select comic shops this past May 3, meeting fans and handing out signed copies of back catalogue issues in support of Free Comic Book Day. FCBD is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free* to anyone who comes into their stores.
Fans were in awe of the opportunity to meet both DFG powerhouses and became giddy when Dan and Darryl agreed to draw some quick convention style sketches [some which were scanned first to allow DFG fans Worldwide have a peak at them]. In addition to the decidedly high-profile guests, FCBC festivities also included performers hired from DFG Characters Appearance Program Company to provide children with a sanctioned and licensed, DFG character to interact with, as well as other activites and giveaways.

Wontellalie Leaks Upcoming Spy-Master Storyline

Is Julius Smithers the Spy-Master????

By Robert Kahn
Freelance Reporter

DFG office cleaner Ernest Wontellalie knows what's in DFG Publisher and President Dan Graves head,...or at least what's in his trash pail. "Any linear or abstract thought Mr. Graves has ends up in my hands, says Wontellalie. I was the first to know about The Spy-master/ Nova wedding!!"

While Ernest's enthusiasm is charming, it has resulted in work suspensions. Former DFG staffer Todd Abbot was known to have a poor opinion of Mr. Wontellalie during his tenure with DFG. "Ernest is a trash-picker, said Abbot. If it's in the trash, it should stay in the trash. Whatever thoughts on paper Ernest thinks he's rescuing were obviously garbage". Mr. Abbot's criticism of Mr. Wontellalie is curious especially since it was Mr. Wontellalie's 'habit' that secured Mr. Abbot a large paycheck for a Captain Nepto issue that was 'rescued from the garbage".

DFG Releases Captain Nepto Collectors' Series Covers

Press Release
"The Last Shall be First!"
In celebration of the launch of the new Captain Nepto Prime series, DFG Comics is releasing a special set of collectors' series covers IN FULL COLOUR! The covers featured in the series are from the original Captain Nepto series which ran through the early 1980's and ended in January 1985 when Cap went to his "new look" and moved to the relaunched Spy Comics title (sharing the title with The Spymaster). The first cover, just released is #9, the final issue of the original series. What makes this even more special is the fact that the cover DFG has used is the "limited edition UK release cover," which depicts more characters than the North American Edition (the North American edition featured only the Jester, Alligator and the Blaster, whereas the Mummy, Crusher and Killer Shark were added for the UK release!). The cover is from what fans call "The Golden Age of DFG" and features vintage art by Darryl Andrews and is newly coloured by DFG's staff colourist, Flora Lovartalot.
