It was all smiles and joy this week in the DFG Comics British Columbia office as DFG Co-Publisher an V.P. tied the knot with the lovely Christine Gagne. The liturgy was conducted by DFG's very own president and publisher Dan Graves and witnessed by DFG comic book artist and superstar Mark Andrews. "The terrace of Sparkling Hill Resort was the perfect spot for such a lovely occasion - a lovely couple, a lovely venue *choke*," said Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, KC, QC, PhD, LLB, DFG's chief legal counsel as he choked back tears of joy. "We are just so happy for Darryl and Christine," said Chief Augustus Smith, head of DFG security, who headed a full security detail to ensure party-crashers and paparazzi did not intrude on this sacred moment. "I guess I'm happy," said comic book legend and superstar Todd Abbot, "I mean, if Darryl is happy, then I guess I am happy. Perhaps he'll drop the assault charges he has against me in all his euphoria." Mr. Abbot was not present for the occasion but watched the event on his 4" screen from his holding cell in the Carnage City Police Department.

When Dan Graves was approached for an interview after the event, all he could say, was single word, "Joy." After they signed the register, and received the nuptial blessing, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews,m being presented by the priest, recessed down the aisle and then glided into their first dance, "Fly me to the Moon."

"It was the most lovely wedding I have ever been at," said DFG colourist, Flora Lovartalot, "we wish them all the best, and thank Dan Graves for his generosity in giving us a quarter of a day off work to enjoy this special day." DFG offices are expected to be open this Saturday for staff to make up the time they missed to attend the wedding.

Todd Abbot Celebrates 41st Birthday -- in Loneliness!

Poor Todd Abbot; the guy just doesn't seem to get any respect. Todd Abbot turned 41 yesterday, but it looks like his chickens are finally coming home to roost as not a single person showed up to his birthday party. The party was held at DFG Corporate HQ in the lunchroom. It was planned by DFG social convenor Ima Partianimmal. Invitations were sent out weeks in advance and a special cupcake (with candle) and party hat were even ordered for Todd, but sadly, there he sat, in the DFG lunchroom, with no one to help him celebrate. Oscar Foodlecollins, DFG webmaster, passed by the lunchroom but did not go in. When asked why he missed the party, Foodlecollins said, "I had to take a massive dump." DFG president Dan Graves was out of the country on business and DFG VP Darryl Andrews, who heads up the DFG West office in Kelowna, BC was in Prince George preparing to open a satellite bullpen. Ima Partianimmal was asked why she did not attend the party she convened: "I plan parties, I don't go to them. I hate to mix work and pleasure." But other DFG insiders said that Todd really has burned most of his bridges at DFG. Some time ago he was involved in insurance fraud with the supposed death and disappearnce of his then-lover, DFG Colourist Flora Lovaratlot, then he faked his own death, and then there have been the numerous lawsuits he has filed against DFG, and of course, the failed hostile takeover bid. "The sad truth is," our inside source revealed, "that nobody really likes Todd. He's actually just a mean prick." The DFG executive apparently sent this special birthday greeting to Todd: "Dear Todd. Happy Birthday." When contacted for elaboration on this curt message, DFG VP Darryl Andrews said, "We wished him a happy birthday. I don't see how we can be criticized in any way. That cupcake and hat took us $2.49 over budget on our hospitality account this year. In a year that we have faced signficant fiancial hardships, I think Todd should be please at the recognition he has received." We tried to reach Todd Abbot for comment, but we did not want to disturb him as he was found crying next to the DFG dumpster.

Cache of Unpublished DFG Art Found in Garage!

Word came into DFG Comics today that a cache of unpublished and rare DFG artwork has been found in a garage in Carnage City! Seen in these photos is DFG VP Darryl Andrews showcasing a small selection of this spectacular find! Especially important is the original cover for the DTA edition of Captain Nepto #1. A complete dollar evaluation of the find is forthcoming, but the entire value is expected to be in six figures.

Bill Shatner may take Canada boldly where no country has gone before, but DFG's own Todd Abbot had recently mentioned that he thought it time for Canada to appoint a comic book legend, (meaning himself) to the position of Governor General.

Momentum of this campaign was halted by the sudden murder attempt upon Mr. Abbot's life and the current status as to his whereabouts cast further mystery and doubt of his pursuit of this most prestigious title.

Amid an on-going murder investigation, international death threats, a case of mistaken identity and scandal; Todd Abbot quietly checked out of the Carnage City Hospital earlier today. His whereabouts at press time remain unknown.

FBI continues Probe

Investigators probing the murder attempt of cartoonist Todd Abbot are trying to find a common tie with the DFG artist and Swedish artist Lars Vilks.

The FBI has been interviewing DFG staff members.

DFG staffer Frank Daniels commented that the FBI agents asked a series of questions intended to discover the possibility that Mr. Abbot had been working on a secret assignement with a Political slant. Mr. Daniels reportedly commented that if Mr. Abbot were working on such a project, he wouldn't create something harmful.

The FBI began interviewing DFG Staff members after sending out a letter from FBI Assistant Director James Kallstrom asking for assistance in the investigation.

Cartoonist 'murder plot' suspects still held

A Croatian man and a woman from the US held in relation to an alleged plot to murder DFG Comic Legend Todd Abbot, have had their periods in Garda custody extended.

The man and the woman were brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court at 9am. The two can now be questioned for a further 72 hours.

Their arrests on Tuesday morning were part of an international investigation into alleged death threats against DFG cartoonist Todd Abott.

Five others - three Algerians, a Libyan and a Palestinian - were also arrested on Tuesday morning and they had their periods of detention extended last night.

Mr. Abbot apparently has been confused with Swedish Artist Lars Vilks who is under treat from al-Qaeda for a political cartoon he drew two years ago. Mr Abbot claims to simply be a super hero artist who does not have any kind of political agenda. How the two artists have been confused is still under investigation.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the possible movements in Ireland last September of US citizen Colleen LaRose, who described herself as 'Jihad Jane'. They are trying to ascertain how much time, if any, she spent with two of those currently under arrest.
La Rose was subseqeuntly arrested by the FBI and indicted on charges in relation to the plot against Todd Abbot and secondly, Lars Vilks.

Gardaí have today again stressed there is no threat to the public here from any section of the Muslim community.

Suprise Gala Banquet for Peter Repovski's 40th Birthday!

Overcome with surprise as he was led into the Carnage City Convention Centre earlier this evening, DFG superstar and comic book great, Peter Repovski, had this to say, "What a surprise... I never expected this." The festivities were in honour of his 40th birthday and expertly organized with care and detail by his better half, Pauline Houle. "I was told that I was on my way to deliver a lifetime achievement award to DFG president and co-publisher Dan Graves, I never thought the party was in my honour... I am humbled." With well over 1200 people in attendance, Mr. Repovski was quickly led to the microphone where he greeted his family, friends, and many adoring fans. "I don't know what to say, except, don't forget to renew your subscriptions to DFG. Oh, and thank you for the party."

The festivities were a welcome diversion from the ongoing crisis on the west coast, where comic book legend, Todd Abbot, is still in hospital recovering from a gunshot wound following the attempt on his life. DFG president Dan Graves explained, "With all the labour disruptions, the opening of the west-coast office, the lawsuits, the hostile take-over bid, and the attempt on Todd's life, we are just happy to put all that aside for one evening and celebrate this wonderful moment with Pete. He is truly one of the greats of the industry and has always been a close personal friend. I am honoured to be with him here tonight. I think Pauline did a great job pulling this all together. Congratulations, Peter, on 40 years... may there be many more."

DFG VP Darryl Andrews took time out from his busy west-coast schedule to send this telegram..."Pete: I hope you have a wonderful day STOP Sorry I can't be there STOP Please accept the best wishes of all the DFG west-coast team STOP And watch out for the bad kalbassa STOP.

Noted guests in attendance were Whitney Houston, Jerry Mathers, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Jerry Lewis, The Amazing Kreskin, Mikail Gorbachev, Sheldon Moldoff, Stan Lee, and Desi Arnez Jr. Pete's family was also well represented by his sisters and his father, a well-known member of the Macedonian community, Mr. Jimmy Repas.

Todd Abbot Sues DFG from Hospital

"I'm going to sue those bastards!" were Todd Abbot's first words spoken after waking up from the emergency operation, which removed a bullet from his chest. Citing an unsafe working environment, Mr. Abbot has issued a claim for Compensation with the W.S.E (We Sue Everybody) Law Firm. A statement from that firm stated, "Workers who are injured as a result of serious negligence or on-the-job accidents are entitled to workers' compensation through their employer. However, when a worker has sustained catastrophic injuries such as those Mr. Abbot has suffered as a result of DFG dictating a forced relocation clause, additional claim of benefits needs to be pursued".

Listed in the lawsuit are DFG President Dan Graves and VP Darryl Andrews. A police investigation into the alleged murder attempt on Mr. Abbot's life is currently under investigation.

Who Shot Todd Abbot?

Word has just arrived in the newsroom that DFG janitor, Ernest Wontellalie, is being held as a "person of interest" by Kelowna authorities in the Todd Abbot shooting. Chief Smith declined to comment on the development. A police sgt. who wished not to be named stated, "Mr. Wontellalie has not been charged with any crime, nor is he technically a suspect, rather, he is simply a 'person of interest.'" In an interview with Bob Barnes outside the DFG fan club meeting house, Javier Santamotzarello (a noted DFG Comics enthusiast) speculated on Mr. Wontellalie's situation: "Well, Ernest has been a source of several leaks of sensitive information from DFG head office in the past. He has been disciplined several times. When Darryl Andrews (DFG VP and co-publisher) moved west to open the Kelowna office, he took Ernest with him to keep him on a tight leash. I wouldn't think him capable of trying to kill a man, though. I suspect that given his propensity to 'share' sensitive information, Chief Smith has brought him in for questioning."

So who shot Todd Abbot? What we know so far is this. Earlier this year Mr. Andrews moved west to open a new DFG Comics branch office. He took with him key members of the DFG staff to get the office up and running. These individuals included DFG Colourist Flora Lovartalot, DFG Letterer Stan Kalligraf, DFG Janitor Ernest Wontellalie, and DFG Production Manager Frank Daniels. Mr. Todd Abbot also moved his studio west at the same time, hoping that his team could provide creative material and support to DFG WEST. On April 16th, after several months of labour action by C.R.A.P.O.N.U. (the labour union to which DFG staffers belong), DFG Comics filed for bankruptcy protection due to sales declines as a result of the labour action and low productivity. On April 17th, Todd Abbot Studios launched a hostile takeover bid to rescue and acquire the trouble DFG empire. Later that day, Mr. Abbot was found shot at point blank range and bleeding profusely in his luxury Kelowna condo.

The rumours are flying as to who shot Abbot. Was it DFG VP and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews? He may have been motivated by the desire to destroy Abbot's takeover bid. Was it colourist Flora Lovartalot? She and Abbot have had a torrid, steamy on and off again love affair for several years. The two were also involved in an insurance fraud incident last year when they faked Flora's death to acquire the insurance benefits. Was it letterer Stan Kalligraf? The only apparent motive might link back to their college days when it was rumoured that they were homosexual lovers in their freshman year. Was it Ernest Wontellalie? Todd is reputed to have snitched on Ernest in at least one of his media leaks. Ernest could conceivably been holding a grudge. Was it Production Manager Frank Daniels who is known for his violent temper and his disdain of artists in general and Todd Abbot in particular?

Todd Abbot Clinging to Life at Kelowna Hospital

A publication ban has just been lifted on Todd Abbot's condition. While rumours were spreading throughout the week that Todd Abbot had died as the result of the gunshot wound that he received last week a thoroughgoing police investigation was underway. Chief Augustus Smith, head of DFG security and former chief of police of Carnage City, had asked the courts to place a publication ban on any reporting of the incident. On Monday morning, Mr. Justice Josiah Pasdownaverdict complied with the Chief's request and placed the publication ban that has now been lifted. Late this afternoon, Chief Smith held a press conference outside the hospital. Here is a transcript of the proceedings:

Chief Smith: Ladies and gentlemen of the press, thank you for coming. I hope that our investigation has proceeded to the point that we can now share some crucial data that has emerged.

Reporter A: Chief, can you tell us what exactly happened to Mr. Abbot?

Chief Smith: He was shot.

Reporter A: Yes, we know that, but how did it occur?

Chief Smith: Someone had a firearm and used it against Mr. Abbot. Next.

Reporter B: Chief, do you know who it was that shot Mr. Abbot.

Chief Smith: Yes.

Reporter B: Will you disclose that information?

Chief Smith: Certainly.

Reporter B: Well then, who was it?

Chief Smitih: An individual who had procured a firearm. Next.

Reporter C: Chief can you tell us where Mr. Abbot was shot?

Chief Smith: Yes... in the chest.

Reporter C: Well, yes, thank you for that information, but I suppose I was really asking "where" as in "what location"?

Chief Smith: I told you. The wound was located in his chest.

Reporter C: I mean where was Mr. Abbot found?

Chief Smith: He wasn't lost. He was shot. Next.

Reporter D: Can you tell us Mr. Abbot's current condition?

Chief Smith: He is suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Next.

Reporter E: Were there any witnesses? Any evidence?

Chief Smith: Yes, two doctors have verified that he was shot in the chest. They even have the bullet to prove it.

Reporter E: I think you may have misunderstood me, Chief. I meant, did anyone witness the shooting?

Chief Smith: I didn't misunderstand you at all.

Reporter E: Well, can you answer my question?

Chief Smith. I did, and my answer stands. Next.

Reporter F: Chief, you seem to be evading the questions.

Chief Smith: Next.

At that point the press conference was drawn to a close. More details will be published as they become available.

Todd Abbot Shot

Reports are surfacing that Todd Abbot was shot early this morning by an unknown individual in his studio office at DTA Comics. A session of the Turkish parliament was suspended to allow legislators a chance to cope with the startling news. At press time condition of Mr. Abbot's well-being is unknown.

Todd Abbot Studios Poised for Hostile Takeover of DFG Comics

A DFG insider leaked the following rumour late last evening that DFG Comics was fighting off a hostile takeover from Todd Abbot Studios. As regular readers will know, DFG announced yesterday that it is facing serious financial difficulties and has sought creditor protection following labour action that began earlier this year. The insider, who wishes not to be named for fear of management reprisals, is a solid source and has been a regular leaker of DFG information to the press. Apparently Todd Abbot met with DFG VP Darryl Andrews late last evening at the BC office and proposed a deal that Mr. Andrews rejected out of hand. The insider, who was within hearing distance, reports that Mr. Abbot said, "Look Darryl, we can either do this pleasantly, or we can get our hands dirty in front of the media." Mr. Andrews is reported to have replied, "Dan sends you this message Abbot: 'The only way you will get DFG away from me is from my cold, dead hands!'" Mr. Abbot was reported to have a meeting scheduled with Mr. Mooney B. Aggs, chief general manager of Carnage City National Bank for first thing Monday morning in order to offer to bail out DFG and bring about a restructuring of management with himself at the head.

If Mr. Abbot is able to pull this off, it will be an extraordinary development in his hot-cold relationship with DFG over the years. In spite of legal action going back and forth over a variety of creative issues, Mr. Abbot has continued to work with DFG for nearly 30 years. He left the staff last year to form his own studio, the Todd Abbot Studio, that also functions under the name DTA Comics, a DFG subsidiary whose trademark DFG accidentally let slip two years ago. When Mr. Abbot acquired the rights to DTA is was a great embarrasment to DFG Comics. The Todd Abbot Studio continued to package stories and artwork for DFG (this has been a source of the labour unrest amongst the DFG bullpen), but has not produced anything this year. Could the withholding of material be part of a more sinister plan by Abbot to strangle DFG into submission?

Breaking News! DFG Comics files for Bankruptcy Protection!

Startling news broke this morning when word quickly spread throughout the DFG offices that DFG Comics has filed for bankruptcy protection. DFG president Dan Graves was quick to issue the following press release:

"Fans will have noted that there have been no DFG publications released in the 2010 year to date. This has been because of an ongoing labour dispute with C.R.A.P.O.N.U. (Creators, Receptionists, Artists, Pencillers, and Oceanic Nautical Illustrators' Union)* local 41. We have continued to offer generous compensation to all our staffers but they walked off the job in early January and as such no new publications have been produced or released. This has, of course, affected our revenue stream. We are now at the point of having Carnage City National Bank calling our line of credit. This is not the end of DFG Comics, only an interlude. We are confident that we can work out an arrangement both with our creditors and our staff."

The catalyst that led to the strike was the increasing use of non-union workers, especially the "Todd Abbot Studio" (which works at a much lower page rate) leaving staffers with fewer assignments and certainly with fewer prestige assignments. We spoke with Marty "Red" Bullshevic, a DFG staff letterer and president of C.R.A.P.O.N.U. local 41, "The last straw was when DFG VP Darryl Andrews took Todd Abbot and his studio to the new B.C. headquarters. There were a lot of DFG staffers who thought they would get to move west as well and become part of the 'west coast bullpen.' We were completely shut out and Todd Abbot Studios got preferential treatment over longtime DFG staffers, contrary to the collective agreement. That's when we walked."

DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, K.G., Q.C., LLB, PhD (who is in remarkably good health for his age, having been born in 1867, and having suffered several health scares in the past few years) made the following statement: "Red Bullshevic and C.R.A.P.O.N.U should go back and read their collective agreement. There is nothing that states we have to favour them over contracted studio work. We would have never been so foolish to let labour run the shop at DFG."

The stand-off continues with DFG on the brink of collapse. And all of this begs the question, if the Todd Abbot Studio is so favoured over DFG staffers, why has it failed to produce any material this year?

* Editor's note: The Oceanic Nautical Illustrators joined the union in 1932 when they were being treated very poorly by despotic ship captains. Other artists and support workers in the creative world rallied to their support in a show of solidarity and later that year C.R.A.P.U. became C.R.A.P.O.N.U.

Leaving on a Jet Plane - DFG VP heads to Vancouver to open new office

Carnage City's favourite son, DFG Vice-President and Co-publisher Darryl Andrews, left the home of DFG Comics and its subisidiary companies this morning at 6 a.m. to begin a new venture. With the economy swinging into recovery it was decided that it was time that DFG open a new corporate office in Vancouver B.C. Mr. Andrews was pegged as the man to do it. "Darryl has long been our point man on new ventures," said DFG President and Co-Publisher, Dan Graves, "He headed up our radio programs in the early 1980's and our TV, Film and Video departments in the late 1980's. He has recently been responsible for merchandising and licensing. He is the man postioned to take us into the next decade. When we met earlier this year it was decided that Vancouver would be the natural place to be given all the potential tie-ins to the 2010 Winter Olympics being held around that city." Word has it that Mr. Andrews will also be working with his brother Markus Andrews, another DFG superstar artist on some exciting new projects for DFG!

There wasn't a dry eye in the airport as crowds gathered to wish the celebrity co-publisher, artist and director well as he departed. As he passed through the gates, the Carnage City Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus were on hand to sing a moving rendition of John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane." As he approached the gate Mr. Andrews to one look back, with a tear visible in his eye, gave a gentle wave and passed through the gate. "I'm going to miss him," said Dan Graves, "we have worked so closely together over the years, and while he has often been away at other branch offices such as Newmarket, the Beaches Pickering, Warkworth, and lately, Peterborough, I know his heart finds its home in Carnage City." Mr. Graves wiped a tear and turned away as the orchestra and chorus concluded the last verse of the song with the words, "babe I hate to go,"

DFG President Flys Back From High Level Meeting in Peterborough

DFG President and Co-Publisher Dan Graves spent last weekend in Peterborough for a high-level corporate meeting with DFG VP and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews. The contents of the meeting was, for the most part, hush-hush, but when reached for comment Mr. Graves was able to give the following details:

"Essentially, we plotted out the entire upcoming year of DFG Comics. Here's what I can tell you. Captain Nepto Prime is on hold for the moment while Darryl Andrews works on a brand-new title The Winged Avenger! As for Spy Comics Presents, issue #6 will be released soon and issues 7 through 10 have been completely scripted. We are also excited about our new line of comic strips. Leighton Graves and I are working Cosmic Man, while the Todd Abbot Studio has resurrected an old DFG Movie concept, Mitchum and Felix and have completed the first three installments."

We reached DFG VP Darryl Andrews to ask him about the new Winged Avenger! comic. "I really can't let the bird out of the cage on this one just yet," he said, "All I can say is that this was a concept Dan and I came up with waaaay back in 1984. Due to other commitments it has been on hold for 25 years! Dan recently slipped the character in as a background character in the Battle of the Invincibles story arc in Spy Comics Presents. It seemed that the timing was finally right to tell the story of a character who is destined to be one of DFG's powerhouse properties!"

Leighton Graves had this to say about the upcoming Cosmic Man strip: "Well, Dad and I wanted to work on something together so I suggested that we explore another one of DFG's little used characters. He appeared on some covers in the early 1980's and in recent issues of Spy Comics Presents. We began to wonder about his secret identity, origins and powers, and then I said, 'hey Dad, why don't we let the fans decide?!" Dad agreed and so we will be featuring special polls on the DFG fan club page where YOU get to decide everything about Cosmic Man!"

Todd Abbot was reached about the Mitchum and Felix comic strip and made the following comments: "Mitchum and Felix were really unused properties in the DFG canon. I'm led to understand that Peter Repovski (who had starred in the Holden and Bates detective series with Dan Graves) was tired of playing the bumbling sidekick against Dan's straight man William Holden, so Darryl Andrews, who directed the DFG films commissioned a new series. In that series Dan starred as the ultra-cool, Don Johnson-esque police detective 'Mitchum', while Peter played his computer geek info-tech partner 'Felix.' Pete really didn't care much for that role either and the series was cancelled after two episodes due to poor distribution. At the Peterborough corporate meeting we were going through our video archives and rediscovered the series. It really is a hidden gem in the DFG corpus. There was a strong feeling we should revive Mitchum and Felix in comic strip form (after all Holden and Bates had been recently revived in Spy Comics Presents as part of the New Invincibles). All the staff were busy with other projects so I suggest that my studio take a crack at it. We have three episodes written, pencilled and inked. Flora is now colouring them." When asked if he was personally involved with the project, Mr. Abbot added, "I drew all the faces. I like to maintain quality control over all my studio's projects and this is one way I can ensure the 'Todd Abbot stamp of approval.' And by the way, eagle-eyed fans will note that Felix is drawn much like Frank Bates. The reason for this is that we really wanted to retain the Peter Repovski look. He's such an impressive actor with incredible facial gestures. We love drawing him. Here's a juicy little tid-bit, we're hoping to reintroduce the DFG villain Milo, who was also featured in the Holden and Bates series and last seen in Spy '96. My artists are carefully studying pictures of the actor who portrayed him, John Burgess, to ensure an authentic portrayal!"

DFG Corporate Conference Set to Take Place at Peterborough Offices

Early this morning, this reporter received a plain brown envelope with a detailed agenda of an upcoming TOP SECRET meeting of the DFG executive staff. The meeting is scheduled to take place this weekend at the Peterborough HQ, and the agenda looks packed. It is, however, difficult to decipher the agenda of the meeting as it appears to be written in code in order to avoid press leakages. One of the agenda items refers to a new seires "taking flight." This can only refer to the upcoming Winged Avenger series. Will this new title be a focus of this meeting? Only time will tell. Another agenda item makes reference to "old friends." Could this be the completion of the unpublished Spy '96 Annual? Again, we will just have to wait and see. More developments will be posted as information becomes available.

DFG V.P. Meets with Lynda Carter to Discuss Graphic Novel

Lynda Carter, known the World over as "Wonder Woman", met with DFG Vice President Darryl Andrews to discuss the creation of a new character that will rock the very core of the DFG Universe. It has long been maintained that The Spy-Master's wife was killed...imagine if, in fact, that was not the case! "There's two ideas floating around regarding an alternate version of The Spy-Master's origin; this is being done for our "DFG Possibilities" Graphic Novel line of books," commented DFG V.P. Darryl Andrews during a questioning period. "The aborted story from Captain Nepto Prime will surface under this banner along with the debut of The Spy-Mistress!" The Spy-Mistress will use Mrs. Carter's likeness in defining the character. Mr. Andrews continued, "When talking with Lynda it became too clear that we at DFG were ignoring a very important demographic..that mainly being the mature woman. Lynda made the idea of developing this character very exciting". Mrs. Carter who is a striking 59 year old woman, had no trouble in deflecting comments with her magical bracelets from other attendees that there is a place for an aging Super Heroine. The Spy-Mistress storyline will either be a reversal of The Spy-Master legend, with Julius dying instead, or a plot development that will have her surviving the shooting and later seek revenge upon her husband for abandoning her. In any case DFG fans have much to look forward too!

This interview is an online version of one concurrently appearing in the print version of the Canadian Comic Insider Magazine. The interview was conducted at the second annual Iqaluit ComicCon, following a special panel moderated by DFG VP and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews. The interview was conducted by CCI staff writer, Millicent Mortificus.

Canadian Comic Insider: Well, it's good to see you again, Mr. Andrews... it's been a year since our last interview, when you were inducted into the Nunavut Comic Book Hall of Fame. How has the last year been for you and DFG Comics?

Darryl Andrews: Sometimes a simple question opens up some serious answers. Whenever someone asks me how things are going, I'd like to tell them, "Oh, I'm fine, DFG is fine" and just move on from it, but then I'd be lying and they might just catch me, biting my lip in such a way that everyone knows I have too much pride to say it's been a tough year. Then, just to make sure anyway, I'd look that person in the face and say, "Actually, I'm not fine. DFG isn't fine. We've been stolen from, lied too, suffered personal break-downs and have spent more time in the hospital then I care to mention. Still, other then the personnel issues and hardship, it's been a very successful year story-wise"

CCI: It was great to see a new issue of Captain Nepto Prime hit the stands. Can you elaborate on why the issue is numbered #13, and explain the concept of "legacy numbering" to our fans?

DA: Legacy numbering is when a series that has been rebooted returns to its original numbering, with the cumulative addition of any other issues published in the interim. "The original series ended in 1985 at #9. Cap then became a regular feature in the second Spy Comics series. Last year we relaunched Cap in his own title under the Prime banner. Those issues were unnumbered and known only by their month of release. For example, Captain Nepto Prime - July. Only three issues were released (May, June & July). Thus, this issue is actually Captain Nepto Prime #4, but in order to avoid further confusion we just decided to return to the numbering of the original series, plus the addition of the 3 Prime issues from last year... as a result, we are now at Issue #13! Future issues will be reckoned by the legacy numbering system! It's an exciting development and it really links us to our history while at the same time looking forward to the future.

CCI: Last year you told us we would be seeing the return of the Crusher. He did reappear in the current issue, but Captain Nepto Prime takes place in DFG's golden age (i.e. the 1980's). Last year you promised that we would see the cyborg version (the result of his collision with the bus) this year... are those plans still in the works?

DA: That story has long been in the works. Sometimes life at DFG is like a lengthy feature film development. I'm very excited about that project and it will be completed, but I can't say when. Since you've brought it up and I know the fans have been waiting a long time for it; I'll review this year's schedule and see if we can't some how bring that story to the forefront.

CCI: What plans do you have in store for Captain Nepto over the next year? And will we ever see the completed version of the story that was intended for Captain Nepto Prime August 2008 that has been shelved?

DA: Nothing is planned for the rest of the year actually. The DFG Universe is moving forward with characters that have been under-developed or under utilized and until it is evident that we have more "Core" characters; mainstays like Nepto and the Spy-Master will sparsely be mentioned and/or featured. As for the completed version of August Prime; I will say without hesitation that it has been removed from this year's schedule.

CCI: Last year you explained that you wanted to "kill" Captain Nepto and that was to happen in the above mention Captain Nepto Prime August 2008. As discussed, that issue has not appeared... how do you feel about DFG President Dan Graves beating you to the punch and really killing his creation, the Spymaster in Spy Comics Presents #5?

DA: The Spy-Master isn't dead silly. I suppose the twig that was so prominently featured in the 'death' panels didn't lend itself to the reality that it was actually a switch to an underwater cavern that Julius swam into after his fall. Nepto and Julius have secret lair's all over the place. Did you not think that Julius and Nepto would stage the final showdown of the Invincibles in a controlled environment? Have you not read the background history on those characters to learn what power-mongers they are? Listen, here it is in simple form; our core characters knew they had to 'disappear' to get that motley lot of B heroes to step up their efforts. Julius is fine, refreshed and well rested; no doubt working on the blue prints on his highly treasured Spy-sub. Now to seriously answer your question, Dan and I discus all story lines well in advance of publication, so there is no beating one another to any punch..except at the year-end DFG staff party.

CCI: Last year you also expressed a hope that the now defunct title DFG's Greatest Heroes would be brought back... any plans?

DA: With the story arc finishing up in Spy-Comics Presents and the new format of featuring different heroes is each issue, the need for DFG's Greatest Heroes is not as pressing. I think that the fans will really serve notice if that title is to return by demanding to see a particular character more often. An interesting option was presented during a DFG staff meeting by our faithful janitor Ernest Wontelalie, to consolidate the entire DFG Universe using the Legacy numbering system and releasing DFG Greatest Heroes #50 as our sole title. This is certainly a radical idea and one that would relieve much of the pressure on our writers and artists to produce work for the many titles we presently offer, but at this time we're not prepared to move forward on that idea.

CCI: I hear that DFG President Dan Graves has plans to digitize all of the back issues of the hard-to-find series Spy '96 and put them online. Is this true, and what does this mean for seeing the unpublished conclusion to that story-arc, namely the still-to be completed Spy '96 Annual with art by Mark Andrews?

DA: Dan is certainly moving forward on that project. The Spy '96 Annual, I am confident will see a release sometime this year. We're also hoping to receive new material from Mark this year; which would in fact be a story that would feature Nepto, but might not release it until the new year to keep confusion of the new direction to a minimum.

CCI: Last year you mentioned creating the Winged Avenger with Dan back in the 1980's, but he never actually appeared. Dan has featured him as a background character in recent issues of Spy Comics Presents... and you even joked about him in Captain Nepto Prime May 2008. The fans are all asking, "when will we see Darryl Andrews draw the Winged Avenger?!?"

DA: I promise to release a Winged Avenger cover this year.

CCI: What projects are currently in the works for you?

DA: I have two actually, both are secrets. Both are rather large in scale and to elaborate on them now would only serve to confuse the aforementioned streamlining of our schedule.

CCI: Last year's Graves/Andrews team-up for Spy Classics #4 where you retold the origin of the Spymaster/Nepto team was great! Any chance we'll be seeing you and Dan Graves team-up again soon?

DA: I hope so. That effort proved to be one of my favourite all time DFG collaborations. Together, Dan and I bring out the best in each of us. There is another effort, uncompleted from the past that would prove the natural next project, but perhaps moving forward with an entirely new story arc would be more fun and exciting for our loyal readers.

CCI: What is the status of the Captain Nepto Daily Strip?

DA: C'mon, give me a break. I've already committed to a Cyborg Crusher appearance, a Winged Avenger cover and my two large secret projects are enough to satisfy even our most loyal fan Javier Santamotzarello. I won't say, there will be no more Nepto Daily Strips this year, but I'd like too.

CCI: Tell us more about Dogman.

DA: I hope you're not confusing me with Todd Abbot. He would be the person of record to discus that with.

CCI: Many fans have been asking about the Todd Abbot Studio. What is it? Just how involved is Todd in the actual artwork?

DA: For years, I employed Todd to ghost my work. It was a successful marriage that allowed more stories to be developed and released without getting trapped in the dreaded 'Bed-time story' queue. Todd has obviously since made a name for himself and is now employing the same tactic. Certainly DFG has benefited from this arrangement as DFG Villains #2 came as a complete surprise to our scheduling team. I hope the studio will continue to produce a number of projects. I can't speak personally for Todd's individual involvement, but I am confident he is at the very least editing the panels.

CCI: What is the latest news on Flora Lovartalot, the DFG Colourist presumed dead when a shelving unit fell on her last fall, and later resurfaced in the jungles of MBingo?

DA: Well, after Flora was violated by that sizable gorilla; she rested in the area hospital. I paid her a visit and we talked. Todd was there also. It was a nice visit. Flora should fully physically recover. I can't comment for sure whether the nightmares will stop....

CCI: Is DFG planning legal actions against Ms. Lovartalot & Mr. Abbot for their alleged life insurance fraud?

DA: No. I think, we're all going to try to move forward. Milton would have the official and final word on that subject however.

CCI: The question on everyone's lips at that this convention..."what new hairstyles do you have in store for Captain Nepto for the next year?

DA: Like I said earlier; Nepto is in a suspended state, but when he returns expect him to sport some funky "urban styles" and a disco perm.

CCI: Last time we closed our interview with a little bit of word association. I'd like to do that again this year.

DA: Certainly, fire away...

CCI: Retro-Spy...

DA: One of my favourite titles, but I see no future releases this year.

CCI: Spy Comics: Villains...

DA: A stroke of genius; what better way to feature our cast of baddies then in their own title!

DFG President Meets With Industry Minister to Discuss Stimulus Funding for Canadian Comic Book Industry

DFG President and Co-publisher, Dan Graves, & Federal Industry Minister, Tony Clement, took time out during Canada Day festivities in Orrville, Ontario to discuss a stimulus package for the beleagured Canadian comic book industry. "Times are tough all around," said Mr. Graves, "and we were hoping the federal government would step up to the plate with some stimulus funding." Unfortunately, the meeting was cut short by a speech the minister had to make to the local residents as part of the celebrations. "I think that our cause is bleak," added Mr. Graves, "the minister made clear that stimulus funding is for infrastructure projects only, and that the creation of 'funny books' hardly falls into that category. It appears that government funding is not on the table for the company that has been 'Bringing You the Best in Canadian Comics Since 1981.' I did let the industry minister know that if he needs any help with federal infrastructure, that we would be happy to lend our heavy hitters, such as Redman, Cyclone & Tornado, and the Winged Avenger to the government to assist in any heavy-duty building projects." The industry minister is reported as saying that he would "take the matter under advisement."

Captain Nepto Prime #13 marks another development for the series. "The Todd Abbot Studio is taking complete responsiblity for the series from this point on," noted DFG President and Co-Publisher Dan Graves. "Darryl's corporate responsiblities at the Peterborough Office have really taken him away from the drawing board of late, and we feel that it is important that he focus primarily on those very important duties which include licensing and product development. Thus, Mr. Abbot who did both 'ghosted' and credited work in the original series, as well as the pencilling duties of the Prime series has taken over the entire creative duties of the new series and will be doing so with the able assistance of the creative team at his studio. We are very happy that Todd was able to step in for us. He has a deep commitment to Captain Nepto and the Nepto family of characters."

When asked about the fate of the unfinished and previously solicted Captain Nepto Prime August 2008 (the original #4), Mr. Andrews noted, "It's still a project that I'm working on. Due to its length ... over 20 pages ... it slowed up our schedule. I still plan to complete it and release it as either an Annual or King-Sized Special.

When reached for comment, Mr. Abbot stated, "Yes, I'm very happy to finally get to work on the creation that I LARGELY CREATED ON MY OWN. And for the record, while my studio will be assisting me, their contributions will be largely minor. I will write, pencil, and ink all the issues. They will provide assistance with paste-up, colouring and lettering only."

Breaking News - from the Jungles of Mbingo!!

Flora Lovartalot is in stable condition after a life-threatening experience. Flora was charged and attcked by a Silverback (gorilla) in the jungles of Mbingo. An eye witness said, "He [the Silverback] was in a bad mood. Flora was on her cellphone in a very serious manner and did not see the beast approach her. Usually gorilla's don't pay attention to anybody, but for some reason he was interesed in Flora. He was about 550 pounds. It happened so fast. All of a sudden he was ontop of Flora, beating his chest."
Reports continue that Flora was knocked to the ground and suffered multiple bite and claw marks. DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, Q.C., K.G. PhD, LLB, was said to be visiting the hospital later today for unknown reasons.

Retro-Spy #2 -- Re-released ONLINE!

DFG Comics is proud to present a re-release of Retro-Spy #2, from January 2007, now online for the first time! In honour of this special occasion, the issue, originally released in black and white now has a full-colour cover. This coloured version of the cover was found amongst the personal effects of Flora Lovartalot. The coloured version of the cover had not previously been released out of respect for Ms. Lovartalot who was presumed dead until late yesterday. Now that it has been determined that she is alive and well, the reprint of Issue #2 with the addition of a full-colour cover can finally be released. This issue features a retelling of the very first appearance of DFG's premiere super-heroine, Nova! Also featured in the issue is Dr. Zed. Dr. Zed (in his civilian identity of master science teacher Gordon Penrose), was the fifth grade teacher of DFG co-publishers Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews. Because Mr. Penrose exerted such a profound influence on the lives of the DFG co-publishers they have included Dr. Zed in several DFG storylines as a respectful homage to their dearly loved mentor, who sadly passed away some years ago. He is fondly remembered and immortalized in his DFG appearances.

Breaking News! DFG Colourist Flora Lovartalot Found Alive in the Jungles of Mbingo!

Word has just arrived in the DFG News Office that DFG Colourist, Flora Lovartalot, has been found alive in the jungles of Mbingo! Yes, that's right, Flora is alive! Over the past several months, DFG fans have been mourning the loss of one Canada's comic book greats. Last November, when DFG Comics moved into its new head office, tragedy struck when an untethered shelf of artwork fell on the popular colourist. After several days of keeping vigil, DFG fans were saddened to learn that Flora had succumbed to her injuries. It was a sad day for DFG, and an especially sad one for comic book legend Todd Abbot, who had been romantically linked to Flora in the days leading up to her death. But late last night, DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, Q.C., K.G. PhD, LLB, who was on Safari in his birth country of Mbingo in Africa, stumbled onto an ancient village populated by a primitive, pre-industrial civilization deep in the jungle, in which he discovered that Flora Lovartalot is alive and well and being worshipped as a goddess by the local tribes. Goldfarbstein immediately notified DFG president and co-publisher Dan Graves and has begun legal proceedings against Ms. Lovartalot and Todd Abbot, who are now believed to have staged the entire accident as an elaborate piece of life-insurance fraud. When reached for comment, DFG VP and co-publisher Darryl Andrews made the following public statement:

"We are, of course, greatly relieved that Flora is alive. However, if she is in
anyway invovled in any kind of fraudulent activity with respect to the
corporation known as DFG Comics she (and any accesory) will be prosecuted to the
full extent of the law."

At press time, Chief Smith, head of DFG security has initiated a full investigation.

Carnage City Radio interviewed DFG Vice President Darryl Andrews about Captain Nepto Prime, DFG's Spring line-up, the move to Webcomics Nation, and his tumultuous relationship with Todd Abbot. Here is a transcript of the interview with the interviewer at WCAR Radio:

WCAR: There have been some big changes at DFG over the last year... can you recap these for our listeners?

DA: DFG is always going to evolve. In today's marketplace it's necessary to keep our position at the top and stay relevant to our readership. WCAR: I understand that there are also some big changes ahead in the upcoming season. Do you have any teasers for us?

WCR: Please tell us about the delays to Captain Nepto Prime, when we can expect the new issue and what it will be about.

DA: Work on Prime has been suspended until a new artist for the title can be found. There is work however, happening on a very special Captain Nepto project that will be available in the next few months.

WCAR: There was recently a serious performance/behavioural issue with your production manager, Frank Daniels. Can you comment?

DA: Talk like that, especially on the radio, is disrespectful.

WCAR: Who are your greatest influences?

DA: I think I'd begin and end with GOD.

WCAR: When can we expect to see stories about Captain Nepto set in the present?

DA: Sometime in the future[!]

WCAR: You previously teased us with an image of a new villain, "The Bumblebee", when and where will be seeing him?

DA: "The Bumblebee" will be a featured character in our "Bedtime Adventures of Captain Nepto" series.

WCAR: And then there's the one everyone has been asking about: "Dogman"?!?!?

DA: You'd have to ask Todd.

WCAR: Okay, you brought him up... How is DFG's relationship with Todd Abbot these days?

DA: Todd's been rather quiet lately. I think that there had to be some time to settle after Flora. Todd remains a professional asset of the company.

WCAR: More specifically, how is YOUR relationship with Todd Abbot?

DA: Personally, I think, he's a stupid prick.

WCAR: Mr. Andrews, thank you for your time... next up... the weather in Carnage City looks stormy...

Spy Classics Annual -- Will It Finally Appear THIS YEAR?

Frank Daniels has been a busy man since he returned last week to DFG after an extended medical leave. "There's much to be done," said Mr. Daniels. "The biggest thing accomplished this week was the move to the Webcomics Nation community for all our online publications. To date Spy Comics Presents, Captain Nepto Prime, and Spy Comics: Villains have all made the move. We hope to have Retro-Spy and Spy Classics posted over there later this week! And speaking of Spy Classics, it is my earnest desire to bring out the long-delayed Annual, this spring." Mr. Daniels was, of course, refering to the much anticipated Spy Comics Annual #1 - Origins Issue, which was slated to be released last spring. "It's easily our most delayed book, even more delayed than the Captain Nepto Prime August 2008 issue. I really want to get our publications back on schedule. The fans expect something better from us and we plan to deliver! Thus, I am starting with our most delayed book and plan to have it available very, very soon. As a teaser, we have released the completed cover which is a composite piece with art by both Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews. I did the colouring, myself." When asked why the book has been delayed so long, Mr. Daniels noted, "Well, it is the work of so many different DFG talents. Both Dan and Darryl have work in the issue, Todd Abbot has a story and last year's legal disputes with him caused some delays. And of course, the death of our colourist Flora Lovartalot has also been a problem. I'm confident, though, that we can get this thing done and that the fans will be very pleased."

A New Page For Our Online Comics!

DFG President and Co-Publisher Dan Graves announced today that DFG's online publications are moving to a new home! Effectively immediately, DFG Comics will be part of the Webcomics Nation community. "By placing our titles on this site we are able to consolidate all our titles onto one webpage and reach a much wider community, " said Mr. Graves. Mr. Graves noted that this development was largely due to the work or recently reinstated Production Manager, Frank Daniels. "Frank took the bull by the horns and got the job done. We're very pleased," add Mr. Graves. "We hope all our fans will visit this new site. The old pages for individual DFG titles will gradually disappear over the upcoming weeks as all of DFG's books become available on this one site. We will continue to maintain this Blogger page as our main source for information and news about DFG Comics. In addition, we will continue to maintain both our DFG Fan Club page and our Captain Nepto page. All other pages will gradually disappear in favour of the new site."

DFG Production Manager Back on the Job!

After having been placed on leave for several months, DFG Production Manager Frank Daniels is back on the job! When asked about how it feels to be back, Mr. Daniels responded, "It's great, Bob. DFG is my life and while I was gone it really felt like a piece of me had died." Mr. Daniels was, of course, referring to his three month suspension which occurred after several inappropriate outbursts on the DFG Comics Fan Page in response to letters from DFG readers. "All I can say is that I am deeply sorry to those who I offended. It was a combination of overwork, unresolved personal issues from my past, and my my steroid addiction that led to the inappropriate behaviour. Thanks to some anger management courses, intensive psycho-therapy and a narc-anon support group, I am now back in the saddle and in charge of my life." When asked about how things are going as he reintegrates at DFG Corporate HQ, Mr. Daniels continued, "Well, as you can see from the inactivity on this webpage over the past three months, DFG desperately needs a production manager. Things have pretty much ground to a halt, production-wise. Spy Comics Presents #5 is nearly ready to hit the press, but has stalled; we still have several issues of Captain Nepto Prime to get out; the long-delayed Spy Classics Annual (origins issue) has been nearly ready to go, but it is delayed as well. We have other projects coming soon, including Future Spy: The Invinicbles of the the 25th Century and now another title, Spy Comics: Villains, whose first issue appeared earlier this year. You see, the boys at DFG need me. Dan and Darryl are great ideas men, but when it comes to actually getting the books on the stands, well, they have some follow-through problems." Daniels appeared happy to be back, but did fidget nervously throughout the interview, causing this reporter to wonder if all his problems really were behind him.

DFG Comics Welcomes President Obama to Canada

DFG Comics has extended a warm welcome to U.S. President Barak Obama on his first trip to Canada. A delegation from DFG HQ were received at Rideau Hall where, following a private audience with the Governer General and the American President, Mr. Obama was presented with an original piece of Todd Abbot artwork commemorating the occasion. The artwork (pictured above) features Canada's Favourite Adventure Strip Character since 1981 (Captain Nepto), giving the "thumbs-up" sign to the President. In honour of the occasion, DFG is releasing a limited number of signed prints of this beautiful Todd Abbot piece. Glossy 8 x 10's are available for a limited time (signed and numbered by the artist) for the low, low price of $99.99 (+ shipping and handling and applicable sales taxes). The artwork is suitable for framing and will hold pride of place in many living rooms and offices for years to come. DFG is currently in conversations with Canada Post to have the artwork appear on an upcoming postage stamp.

High-level talks with Sopha Continue

Another high-level secret meeting took place on Saturday night between DFG President and Co-Publisher Dan Graves, and the comic book legend known only as "Sopha." Sopha was involved with DFG in the late 1980's but disappeared from the scene and lived in relative obscurity until recently. Inside sources say that he spent many years traveling the far East learning both contemplative meditation techniques and several martial arts. He is reported to be a master swordsman as well. An inside source says that the "man with one name" recently returned from his travels, after having visited a mountain-top guru, achieving an inner-peace and the realization that he must follow his bliss and return to his first love, comic books.

"With Frank Daniels having been placed on leave," reported one DFG insider, "it seems like an opportune time to bring in some new blood." Sopha is known primarily as an "ideas" man who is reported to have several ground-breaking concepts for the DFG line, including a whole line of titles featuring DFG characters outside of regular continuity. The same insider reported, "DFG has 28 years of confusing continuity and it may be difficult for new fans to enter into the stories. Rumour has it that Sopha will be named editor of a new line of titles under the label Superstar. These titles, such as Superstar Spymaster, Superstar Captain Nepto, and Superstar Redman, will occur outside of regular continuity and will feature all kinds of exciting surprises." Neither Dan Graves nor Darryl Andrews could be reached for comment. The whereabouts of "Sopha" remains unknown.

Frank Daniels Rumours Swirl - Roid Rage

The whispers started out small. The signs were growing more and more obvious. DFG Headquarters has a loose cannon. DFG staffer Frank Daniels has been exhibiting behavior that many in the Comic Industry are attributing to "Roid Rage". An unidentified source noted,"The potential for roid rage adds the additional risk of a person hurting himself or others by extremely violent behavior while on steroids". The source continued, "Despite clinical studies, any steroid user is risking the potentially dangerous effects of extreme behavior changes when taking steroids. Some people may be so vulnerable that behavior changes occur rapidly, causing the person to behave in a manner illegal or so disruptive that it can quickly ruin a life."

Another DFG Superstar Creator from the Past to Return?!

Word has just come in that DFG President and Co-Publisher, Dan Graves, has been in contact with the man known only as "Sopha." Long-time DFG fans will remember "the man with one name" as a creative genius who contributed several key concept ideas to DFG back in the mid-late 1980's. Perhaps his most enduring creation (with DFG President Dan Graves) was the Grim Avenger, who is now one of our headline stars, featured regularly as a member of the Invincibles in DFG's flagship title, Spy Comics Presents... We have no word at this time whether or not Sopha will be returning and bringing his genius back to DFG, only that he and the DFG President have a high level meeting planned for the near future. Spy Comics Presents...#5 has been plagued by publication delays since last fall. It continues to carry the Winter 2008 date, but 2008 has come and gone. Where is it? "We had some problems," commented DFG publisher Dan Graves, "After the death of Flora Lovartalot, our colourist, the project was temporarily delayed. It was passed along to Frank Daniels to finish, but with his recent problems we have removed him from the project. I'm pleased that Todd Abbot stepped up to the plate and has been colouring the issue." Mr. Graves indicated that we will likely see the completed issue online in early February.

Disciplinary Action Against DFG Production Manager

We have just learned that DFG Comics has taken disciplinary action against its production manager Frank Daniels. A press release from DFG corporate HQ issued by V.P. and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews stated, "It has come to our attention that Mr. Daniels has recently used an inappropriate tone when answering fan mail on our fan club site. Mr. Daniels has always been a stellar employee and hard working member of the DFG staff. It is unfortunate that a recent increase in his workload has caused him to become unbalanced. He has been enrolled in an anger management course and has had a letter placed in his file. We apologize to any fans that were offended by either his remarks or tone." Mr. Daniels, who coordinates the production schedules, printing and online publishing of all DFG publications is also widely known as "DFG's Answer Man." He earned this nickname some years ago due to his encyclopedic knowledge of the DFG Universe. Speculation has mounted that Mr. Daniel's recent psycholigical break-down was due the fact that his workload had become unmanageable after the untimely death of DFG colourist Flora Lovartalot. Mr. Daniels, who is known to be quite a multi-tasker, took on ALL of Ms. Lovartalot's former duties in addition to his already overflowing workload. When reached at the DFG Peterborough office, Mr. Andrews added, "I have very little to add to the press release except that Mr. Daniels has been temporarily relieved of his 'public' duties for the period of two months. The fan page will be co-administered in the interim by the team of Martin R. Schoedel (the official DFG Historian), and Antiquda Recordafile (the official DFG Researcher). Fans are still welcome to submit their fan mail and questions to our Official Fan Page."

High-level Meeting Held at DFG Corporate HQ

Sources have revealed to this reporter that a special high-level meeting took place at DFG Corporate HQ this week between DFG co-publishers Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews, and a variety of other DFG senior staff. Apparently the meeting was held to flesh out the upcoming Spring line-up, which kicked off this month with the introduction of an all-new series Spy Comics: Villains. "We're very excited," said Mr. Andrews, "several of our projects that remain unfinished from last year will come to completion this year, including Spy Comics Presents... #5, the two unfinished issues of Captain Nepto Prime as well as the Spy Classics Annual (origins issue). But in addition to all this you can be sure that DFG has some surprises planned." When asked what new directions DFG has in store, Mr. Graves added, "I can tell you this ... while you have seen us telling many stories from the past in recent months (editor's note: Mr. Graves was here refering to the titles, Spy Classics and Retro-Spy), we feel that it is now time to gaze into our crystal ball and examine the world of DFG in the distant future ... as a result, you can expect to see a special story in the upcoming season entitled, The Invincibles of the 25th Century!" This groundbreaking news was also accompanied by the news of a special tribute issue (for which magazine is yet to be determined) in which Mr. Graves will pay homage to his uncle, Bryan Rason, a country music legend and superstar. "I have a special issue planned that will feature a character based on Bryan... it is the least I could do for someone who has been such an important influence on my life." Mr. Graves refused further comment on these two exciting new developments. Mr. Andrews also noted that Spy Comics Presents #6 will feature the return of Big Jon, a character created and immortalized by Tim Graves in the award-winning 1980's film series produced by DFG Studios. Villain of the Month for January: Spychiatrist

A New Year's Message from The President of DFG: Part I -- 2008 in Review

Dear Fans:

With a new year comes new opportunities, new excitement, and new developments for your favourite DFG comics and characters. But before I preview the upcoming year, it seems right to look back and reflect on 2008 -- a year that had both ups and downs for Canada's premier comic book company. So, relax and journey with me through the year that was (follow the links to view the respective stories).

In January we launched our Online Publications division with the re-release of Spy Comics Presents the Invincibles #1, which had been originally published in 2006 as we relaunched our entire print line. The success was so great that we have now moved almost entirely to online publishing.

In February, the DFG offices were embroiled with an apparent scandal over so-called "bedtime heroes." Fortunately, I was able to set the record straight and the controversy subsided. We also received a scare that Todd Abbot had contracted a serious disease, but these rumours were later proven to be false. This was also the month that we became involved in a legal battle with Todd Abbot. This legal battle led to much fan feedback on our site, and indeed, some abuse of this site. Our chief of security issued a stern warning in an attempt to calm things down.

In March, my artwork for the cover of Spy Comics #1(original series - 1981), long thought destroyed, was found and fetched $50,000 on the antiquities market. News soon broke that one of our film characters from the 1980's was set to appear in an upcoming comic. It was soon revealed that this character was Big Jon, a creation of Timothy Graves, under the stage name Timothy David. Indeed Big Jon will be appearing in the upcoming Spy Comics Presents...#6. Another piece of exciting news was the announcement of the return of Canada's Favourite Adventure Strip Character, Captain Nepto, to a regular, ongoing monthly series, Captain Nepto Prime! Then, as if March had not been a busy enough month, DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, was suddenly taken ill and rested at death's door while we all waited in silent vigil. Life had to go on at DFG, though, and Oscar Foodlecollins (DFG's webmaster), in the midst of all this turmoil and sadness, announced the launch of the DFG Fan Club website. Then, as if things weren't bad enough, DFG VP Darryl Andrews' villa was broken into and several valuable pieces of art were stolen. The month ended on a high note, though, when I received word on Easter morning that Sir Milton had made a miraculous recovery!

April was a month of conflict with superstar Todd Abbot after he felt snubbed that he had not been asked to work on the new Captain Nepto Prime series. This was followed by Abbot stealing Darryl's old DTA Comics trademark and attempting to launch his own Nepto series. I strenuously asserted OUR ownership of Nepto.

In May we hired a massage therapist to help reduce the stress around the office brought on by our legal conflict with Todd Abbot. That hire helped us to reduce the tension enough that we were able to come to an agreement with Todd Abbot in which he and Darryl would collaborate on the new Captain Nepto Prime series. I issued a definitive press release to clarify the arrangement. We then announced the official launch of the Captain Nepto Website!

In June we were able to finally get the second issue of Spy Comics Presents online. Todd Abbot once again caused us some trouble with his resignation and I made a suitable response. I also granted the first of a series of interviews with The Canadian Comic Insider.

July was an exciting and productive month as we launched the Spy Classics Website and released Spy Classics #1 - a retelling of the very first Captain Nepto story! Our VP, Darryl Andrews, also got his turn at a series of interviews with the Canadian Comic Insider. However, the biggest news of the month was the return of DFG superstar artist Mark Kendall Andrews to the DFG bullpen, with an issue of Spy Comics that is now scheduled to be the 2009 Annual!

August brought the introduction of a Captain Nepto Daily Comic Strip, by Darryl Andrews. The Todd Abbot resignation required further comment, which I dutifully made. We hired a Director of Philanthropy to deal with all of the requests we get for financial assistance. Finally, Darryl got our merchandising and toy division off the ground with the introduction of a Spymaster action figure sculpted by Leighton Graves.

In September, much of our day-to-day creative work ground to a halt as DFG Corporate HQ moved to its new location.

In October we announced the return of Retro-Spy, a series dedicated to telling tales from the golden-age of DFG. It was to feature a Christmas special which was, sadly, not available in time for Christmas this year. Also, Darryl visited with the Amazing Kreskin who predicted a banner year for DFG in 2009! The highlight of October, though, was the launch of Leighton Graves' newest comic strip, The Glow Kids!

November was a month of tragedy for DFG as our colourist, Flora Lovaratlot, was tragically injured at our new coporate HQ. The incident, with unfounded allegations of negligence on our part, sparked a near-riot. Sadly, Flora subsquently succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Todd Abbot, with whom she had been romantically linked was reportedly distraught, as were we at DFG corporate HQ.

December was a month of regrouping as several of our titles were delayed by Flora's untimely death. Then with the possiblity of the Canadian government falling, DFG was approached by Jack Layton to help form a coalition government. When the G.G. prorogued parliament this possiblity dissapated. Things then slowed down as mourning for Flora continued, although one interesting photo was released unveiling Todd Abbot's inspiration for his new creation, Dogman.

Well folks, it's been quite a year, with many good things and some bad things, but one thing is for certain, we have a great 2009 planned for our fans. Watch this space for details. Oh, and one more thing: in the upcoming days we will be releasing the nominations for the DFG Fan Awards in which you will be able to vote for your favourite comics and creators of 2008. DFG janitor Ernest Wontelalie, set it upon himself to uncover the first look for our loyal DFG readers. DFG Comics to Help Form Coalition Government?

Word has just hit the streets that DFG Comics Co-Publisher and Vice-President Darryl Andrews has been approached by Federal NDP leader Jack Layton to help form a coalition government. Support for the Liberal-NDP-Bloc alliance seems to be crumbling as the Liberal party seeks to install a new leader and seems determined to go it alone. Jack Layton, determined to topple the Harper government, approached the DFG VP late yesterday in a reported back-room deal that will bring an NDP-DFG alliance into the House of Commons to form a government. "People are really fed up with what is happening in Canadian politics, right now," said Mr. Andrews, "Jack called me and said, 'Look, Darryl, DFG Comics is just about as popular as any of the parties in the House at present. I think with the support of DFG fans, we could have a groundswell of support and convince the Governor General that we could topple the Harper government and form a government of our own that would ensure at least 4 years of stability for Canadians during this time of economic crisis.'" When asked how he responded, Mr. Andrews, clearly enthused said, "Hell, ya! I'm in Jack." Todd Abbot is already reported to be seeking a cabinet seat in the prospective government.

Todd Abbot "Side-lined" by Sudden Illness

Since the untimely passing of Flora Lovartalot, Comic-book Artist Todd Abbot has been suffering with bouts of mental illness. Thinking Billy Corrigan of Smashing Pumpkins (whom he's never met) is trying to enlist his services in drawing the cover album art for the band's next release is but one of the many curious behaviors he is exhibiting. More curious was his actions as he layed down outside his mobile home and announced he was going to grow turkeys. Abbot is showing all kinds of symptoms of mental illness including: shifting between giddy and nonsensical, happy to depressed, crying, and semi-normal, to belligerent, foul mouthed, vulgar and destructive behavior over a period of hours, back and forth. He's barely slept or eaten since Flora's death. Darryl Andrews, DFG Co-Publisher commented, "I doubt the validity of the psychiatric diagnosis due to the sudden onset and severity of the symptoms, and suspect physio-neurological problems instead. Todd is simply, one messed up person". Todd Abbot could not be reached for comment as he is on foot in the Amalfi Coast.

Flora Lovartalot -- Dead at 52

A wave of torrential sadness washed over the comic book industry today as word quickly emerged that DFG Colourist extraordinaire, Flora Lovaratlot, has died. Ms. Lovartalot, known for her bold colour choices and flamboyant hats was a relative newcomer to DFG. Fans have been keeping vigil outside the Carnage City General Hospital for over a week following the tragic shelving accident that hospitalized her. One fan, who introduced the "tether for Flora" campaign drove all the way from North Carolina to lead in a special vigil. "I'm devestated that I got here too late," said Louise Expatcanuck, "she was a special person and left us too young. Mark my words, I will not rest until every single IKEA shelf is safely teathered!" Another well-known DFG enthusiast, Javier Santamotzarello, commented, "It's a sad day... Flora introduced a look to DFG that revolutionized their line. Until Flora arrived, DFG only published in black and white. Flora revitalized their whole look. She will be sorely missed." DFG corporate HQ issued this terse press release: "It is our sad duty to advise the public that Flora Lovaratlot has died. We express our deep sympathy to her family." When asked for comment, Comic book giant Todd Abbot (who has recently been romantically linked to Ms. Lovartalot) stated, "That just shows once again how insensitive those clowns are... FLORA HAD NO FAMILY!!!" This reporter could not help but shed a tear as the crowds gathered outside DFG HQ to lay flowers and wreaths in Flora's memory.

Back in August two pages of the highly anticipated Spy Comics Presents the Invincibles #5 were leaked by an inside source at DFG Corporate HQ (click here for story and pages). Now, amidst the pandemonium generated by the freak accident and hospitalization of DFG colourist, Flora Lovartalot, two further pages of Dan Graves pencilled artwork have been posted online. Pages 3 and 4 reveal the mounting tenion in the concluding chapter of "The Battle of the Invincibles." Again, the suspected source is DFG janitor, Ernest Wontellalie, who has already received several reprimands for his previous leaks. Oscar Foodlecollins, DFG webmaster has provided DFG ONLINE with scans of the pages. "I'm shocked... and saddened," said DFG Publisher and Vice-President Dan Graves, upon hearing of the leaked pages, "That someone would take advantage of the confusion of this tragic situation to loot the DFG offices for artwork to post on the internet is just plain unconscionable." Chief Augustus Smith, head of DFG security also commented, "We really have egg on our faces, this time. This sort of thing seems to now standard for DFG staffers. Let me tell you, this time we are going to lay charges and get to the bottom of such scandalous behaviour." At this hour, DFG legal counsel, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, KG, QC, LLB, PhD, is in court attempting to obtain an injunction to have the pages removed from the internet.

Injury to Colourist Sparks Near Riot

Fans took to the streets this afternoon after learning of the freak accident that hospitalized DFG colourist Flora Lovartalot late last evening (click here for full story). What can only be described as a near-riot broke out in front of DFG corporate HQ. Carnage City Police Chief Seamus McMullen (pictured in the top photograph) was forced to subdue one distraught fan who was calling for the blood of DFG co-publishers Graves & Andrews. "I'll tell ya, it was quite a scene," said McMullen, "fortunately, after some tazer applications, tear gas, and rubber bullets, the crowd dispersed peacefully." A similar crowd gathered later outside the Carnage City General Hospital to hold vigil for Flora (see lower picture). The Carnage City P.D. was on hand to ensure no violence erupted.

This reporter spoke with several fans outside the hospital. "We just want Flora to know that we love her, and are praying for her recovery," said one teary-eyed woman. Another man added, "I think everyone is being hard on poor Ernest (editor's note: Ernest Wontellalie -- the DFG janitor who improperly secured the shelving unit that fell on Flora). No one ever uses those tether straps... it was just a freak accident." DFG enthusiast Javier Santamotzarello was on hand to lead in a special prayer vigil and candlelight service.

Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews have been unavailable for comment, although Mr. Andrews was spotted at a local bistro in the company of several foreign investors, reputedly closing an overseas licensing deal. Mr. Graves has avoided the media.

DFG Colourist is Hospitalized... Todd Abbot Keeps Vigil at her Bedside

Tragic news greeted the comic book industry this morning as we learned of the hospitalization of DFG colourist, Flora Lovartalot. Ms. Lovartalot, who has been at DFG Comics for less than a year has taken the industry by storm with her bold style, appears to have been the victim of a freak accident at DFG corporate headquarters. Precise details of the accident are unclear at this hour, but an inside source at DFG corporate HQ has told this reporter that the tragic accident occured shortly after a late-night staff meeting. "Apparently," says the unidentified source, "Ms. Lovartalot left the meeting after receiving her latest assignment. She went to the inventory shelves to retrieve artwork for colouring and as she reached for the artwork, the whole shelf toppled onto her and she was crushed." DFG Comics has just moved into its new HQ and the shelf apparently contained hundreds of heavy boxes of artwork dating back to the early 1980's. "It was just awful," said Antiquda Recordafile, DFG's head researcher, "I heard a crash, came running out and all I could see was this shelf, piles of boxes, scattered comic book pages and poor Flora's arms and legs protruding from underneath the fallen shelving unit -- there was no screaming, all I could hear was poor Flora wimpering in pain." DFG co-publisher and Vice-President Darryl Andrews was reached for comment, "I'm certainly not commenting to the press on such vicious rumours of our corporate irresponsbility. Just get that microphone out of my face, NOW!" While DFG bosses weren't talking, I caught up with DFG legal counsel Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, QC, KG, LLB, PhD, who noted, "DFG can bear no legal responsiblility for Ms. Lovartalot's carelessness and colossal stupidity." Another source noted that due to the haphazard nature of the recent move, the new shelving had not been properly tethered to the wall. DFG janitor and maintenence manager, Ernest Wontellalie was questioned by this reporter about this apparent oversight, "Tethered? Tethered?" he said, "Does anybody actually pay attention to those IKEA instructions that say you have to tether a bookshelf to the wall? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. They're bookshelves for crying out loud... People need to be careful, bookshelves fall over sometimes... sheesh." And what of poor Ms. Lovartalot's condition? Dr. Mortificus P. Dulytle commented that she is in critical condition at Carnage City General Hospital and in the ICU. He would not give any further information other than that DFG comic book legend Todd Abbot was keeping vigil by her bedside. This seems to confirm other reports that Ms. Lovartalot & Mr. Abbot have become romantically involved in recent days. Mr. Abbot was reached on his cellphone at the hospital, "It's just another example of the corporate irresponsiblity exercised by this friggin' company...Somebody's gotta bring those jackasses down before someone else is hurt... They hide behind that Goldfarbstein clown and his friggin LLB and pretend all is well in the friggin' DFG universe, well I can tell you, it's not all well, Flora's clinging to her life, here! DFG is cursed, man!" Mr. Abbot was obviously referring to the reputed "DFG Curse." The so-called "DFG Curse" as been dubbed such by observers who have noted the various calamities that have struck DFG staff members over the past year (Darryl Andrews was assaulted by thugs who broke into his villa earlier this year and looted his priceless art collection, Sir Milton Goldfarbstein was hospitalized after a mysterious illness, and Todd Abbot was suspected of having Kaposi's Sarcoma as well). We will keep you posted on Ms. Lovartalot's condition as information becomes available.

Always fans of the early horror film genre, the DFG co-founders masqueraded as two classic monsters, with Darryl as Dracula and Dan as the Frankenstein Monster. Rights for the Universal versions of the characters could not be obtained so they dressed the lesser-known but equally classic versions from the British Hammer films series. Glow Kids Comic Strip Begins!

DFG has just released the artwork for its newest comic strip, The Glow Kids! Written and drawn by up and coming DFG superstar Leighton Graves. The quirky cast of characters, the children of members of the Glow Gang, include Red-Glow, Mini-DJ, Gooey, Mini, Curby, Mini-Marine Maiden and Onion Girl. The first strip introduces the characters and gives us a preview of their powers. Asked about future storylines, Leighton would only say, "I can't give away all the suprises...check in at the DFG site regularly to keep up with the Glow Kids!"

Kreskin Predicts Banner Year for DFG Comics

DFG Vice-President and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews led a contingent of staff members from the DFG Peterborough branch office to a very special appearance of the world-renowned Amazing Kreskin. Kreskin, the author of several books and the star of a memorable TV programme, met the DFG executive and had this picture taken together. Kreskin, is known for his numerous accurate predictions about world events as well as reading the minds of audience participants as they concentrate on the subject in question.

Kreskin placed his predictions for DFG's upcoming year in an envelope that was signed and sealed by a member of the law firm Goldfarbstein and Associates. The envelope will be opened and the predictions read in Oct. 2009. What does the future hold for DFG and will Kreskin's predictions come true? Only time will tell. The only thing Mr. Kreskin would say was, "2009 will be a banner year for DFG Comics!"

DFG is "On The Move!"

Fans have been asking why DFG has been slow releasing several of its promised Fall books and the answer came in a press release today from DFG President and Co-Publisher, Dan Graves. "We've kept this fairly quiet up to this point but DFG is moving into a new corporate HQ on Oct. 6, 2008 and this has delayed some of our Fall publications." Delayed books include the long-anticipated Spy Classics Annual #1: The Origins Issue, Captain Nepto Prime July & August issues, and Spy Classics #4. Mr. Graves noted, however, that Spy Comics Presents...#5 is still on track for a Winter 2008 release, as is the Retro-Spy Christmas Special. "We are optimistic that the late releases can be fit in before the end of the year," added Darryl Andrews, Vice President and Co-Publisher, "In fact we have our staff working through the night to bring these projects to completion. However, you must understand that a move of this magnitude means that all hands have been on deck to relocate the DFG offices."

DFG Comics, with its creative, marketing, production and merchandising divisions now has a staff of over 200 people and has apparently outgrown its previous modest offices. The new offices are quite attractive and will be situated to better serve the needs of the growing company. When questioned if the US stock market crisis has affected the company, Mr. Andrews noted, "Of course not... we are a private company owned completely by Mr. Graves and myself. DFG is secure and safe in these turbulent and economic times. Fans may rest assured that DFG will be around for many years to come!"

Is Repovski Returning to DFG?

Is Peter Repovski returning to DFG? "That's what it looks like," said DFG enthusiast Javier Santamotzarello who snapped this photo of the superstar inker shaking hands with DFG president and co-publisher Dan Graves, at Repovski's booth at the Toronto Fan Expo.

"Let's just say that Pete and I go back a long way, and it was just nice to see an old friend again... and one who is doing so well in the industry, at that," commented Mr. Graves. But when pressed about Repovski's possible return to DFG, Mr. Graves added, "I really can't comment on that at this time. It is true that Pete has some of my pencilled artwork which he is intending to ink for a future issue of Spy Comics, but I really can't talk about other future plans between DFG and Repovski. Certainly no deall has been signed at present and Pete is very busy working on other projects, presently. My hope is that he will have something for us in the near future. I promise that I will keep you updated with future developments."

Peter Repovski, the creator of Nitro: The Man with the TNT Punch contributed widely to DFG Comics in the mid-1980's with his own Nitro title as well as several other projects. He is widely known as the "Godzilla of the Comics Industry," because of his gigantic status amongst professionals. Mr. Graves and Mr. Repovski were present at the show with DFG Vice President and Co-Publisher Darryl Andrews, signing copies of the recently released Spy Classics #3, an previously unpublished collaboration from 1996.

When asked about Dan's interpretation of Nitro in the recent Spy Comics Presents title, Mr. Repovski simply replied, "LOL."

DFG Toys Division Debuts Action Figures

Director of Philanthropy Hired!

DFG Comics President and Co-Publisher Dan Graves announced earlier today that after an extensive search, the position of Director of Philanthropy for DFG Comics has been filled. DFG comics is pleased to announce to our readership that Sir Jephtha P. Ecclesiasticus has been appointed to fill this important position. Sir Jephtha comes to DFG with a wealth of experience as both a fund raiser and "social butterfly."

After completing several degrees in a variety of erudite subject areas, he went on to post-graduate work in philanthropy at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Wealth and Supercilliousness in the world-renowned economics department at Carnage City University. Sir Jephtha has worked for a number of well-known charities and NGO's including the National Organisation for Non-employed Organists (NONO), the International Relief Agency for Tasmanian Existentialists (IRATE), and has done freelance work for several professional cartoonist guilds including the Canadian Resource Association of Panelologists (CRAP). "We are extremely pleased that Sir Jephtha will bring this wealth of experience to DFG," said Mr. Graves. Sir Jephtha issued the following remarks to the press gallery at the news conference. "With the increased number emails from Kenya, Uganda, and other African nations arriving at the DFG offices requesting assistance, as well as the several hundred phone calls per day, such as request to sponsor kids for the police officers and firefighters circuses, Value Village and Goodwill charity clothing pick-ups, and requests for other funds, DFG felt that they needed someone to handle the quantity of requests. I am obviously the right person, given my extensive experience and expertise."

Sir Jephtha was born in England, but has travelled the world extensively. He was knighted in 1935 for his extensive charity work during the Great Depression. He is single, has no children, but keeps a pet Iguana.

A previously unknown photo, dated c. 1977, was has been found in the DFG Archives. DFG staff researcher, Antiquda Recordafile, discovered the photo earlier this week. "It's a truly remarkable find," said Ms. Recordafile, "as it features DFG superstars and one fan from the very earlier years of DFG." Depicted in the photo, left to right, are DFG Co-founder (and creator of Captain Nepto), Darryl Andrews; next is Craig Hodgson (a DFG fan from the very beginning); Simon McClenaghan, creator of the SPM Heroes (Electrolight, the Black Shadow, Formation Man, SuperFly, Speed Burner, and the Bow); and DFG Co-Founder (and creator of the Spymaster), Dan Graves. Mr. Graves' head his partially cut-off because it is believed he was holding up the camera to take the picture. "I believe that the photo was taken at an early DFG Staff lunch, held annually on the occasion of Mr. Andrews' birthday," added Ms. Recordafile, "I think that Craig Hodgson had won a contest to have lunch with the DFG superstars depicted here and that explains his presence at an otherwise closed event." When DFG President and Co-Founder Dan Graves was reached for comment, he stated, "Ah yes, I have fond memories of those lunches, and of course, of the people. These were great days for the industry... We were so young and optimistic. It was before the cynicism of the eighties and the narcissism of the nineties. These were good times and these were certainly good people. I'm glad we all had the chance to work together at the very beginning of DFG!"

August Villain

Our August Villain is Insanity.

Insanity was introduced in the final issue (#8) of the original Spy Comics series, way back in 1985. Insanity was actually a wealthy high society heir named Sherrinford P. Worthington IV. Worthington had been committed to the Carnage City Asylum for mental health issues. He soon began to manifest strange abilities such as the ability to induce vertigo when others gazed upon his stare. He could also put his victims into a temporary state of insanity. In Spy Comics #8, he escaped from the asylum and began to wreak havoc in Carnage City. Chief Augustus Smith called upon The Spymaster to help track him down, but The Spymaster fell victim to Isanity's deranged touch.

Sadly, the story was never completed, as the series was rebooted and relaunched later that year. Many old threads were never picked up... the Insanity story is one of those. Will Insanity make a return to the DFG Universe anytime soon? Only the DFG "brass" knows for sure, and they're keeping things under their hats for now. Mark Andrews Concept Sketch for "lost" Spy 96 Annual Comes to Light!!!

With all the buzz surrounding the return of superstar artist Mark Andrews to DFG Comics, a previously unknown concept sketch for the never-completed Spy '96 Annual has come to light. The sketch features a montage of scenes from the unpublished annual. When reached for comment Mark Andrews noted, "Wow, I'd completely forgotten about that sketch. That certainly is a sterling example of my Dali-esque surreal phase." Asked if he had any plans to complete the issue, he noted, "Well, as I understand it, Frank Daniels is collating the whole damned mess and trying to make something out of it. It was really quite good work, but I did it somewhat piecemeal and there are gaps." According to DFG publicist, Selina Silvurtungdevul, the annual is scheduled to finally be released later this year, but DFG production manager (and writer) Frank Daniels is finding the material quite challenging, "Frank is basically taking the thing panel by panel and creating a prose script that will accompany it so that it has much the feel of a pulp magazine. Another problem is that some of the panels are only pencilled, some are inked, while others are completely pencilled, inked and coloured. Frank hopes to have things tied up on this by Christmas." DFG fans are anxiously awaiting Mark Andrews return to DFG Comics!

DFG President Comments on Todd Abbot Resignation

Dear Fans:
Earlier this week, Mr. Todd Abbot announced on his website that his "25 year exclusive contract" with DFG Comics had expired and that he intended to pursue work with other publishers. I wish to inform the DFG readership that Mr. Abbot has never had an "exclusive contract" with DFG Comics, much less an exclusive contract for 25 years. Mr. Abbot has done much work for DFG over this time frame and we at DFG consider him part of the DFG family. There is also no truth to the rumour that I was not pleased with Mr. Abbot's work on Captain Nepto Prime and that is why I removed him from the title. Nepto creator Darryl Andrews wanted to take the book in a new direction so I immediately reassigned him to some work on the Spy Classics Annual (origins issues), in which he was allowed to complete his long-delayed Cyclone & Tornado origin story. In addition, I assigned him the origin of the Warrior, but he has yet to turn it in.

To summarize, Mr. Abbot has always been welcome to work with other publishers and I continue to welcome any contributions that he might make to the DFG stable of titles. We are grateful for his past contributions and wish him well in his future endeavours.

Spy Comics Presents 2009-2010 Lineup Revealed!

At a press conference at DFG Corporate HQ late last evening DFG Co-Publishers Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews released the 2009/2010 lineup for Spy Comics Presents. "With the "Battle of the Invincibles" storyline wrapping up in Issue 5, the Winter 2008 issue, we felt it was time to unveil the next story arc," commented Mr. Andrews, "Dan has been working very hard plotting the next five issues and has begun breakdowns on #6 already." An exciting development was the release of the cover for #6 which was drawn by Darryl Andrews and coloured by Flora Lovaratlot. "I'm very pleased with Darryl's cover," said a smiling Mr. Graves, "It really catches the flavour of the issue quite nicely. While fans have voted Captain Nepto Prime their favourite series to date, it seems like everyone wants a crack at Spy Comics Presents, our flagship title." Mr. Graves was of course refering not only to Darryl's cover but also to Mark Andrews' recently released cover for an upcoming issue. We asked Mr. Graves about Mark's issue and when it would be appearing, "Well, Frank Daniels, our production manager, is working very closely with Mr. (Mark) Andrews to determine when he will have the issue ready. We can slip it in any time because it appears that the story will be self-contained. At this point, though, we're scheduling its release after the upcoming story arc is completed, probably as issue #11)." Darryl Andrews added that he was quite pleased that his brother had agreed to put pencil to paper and return to DFG. When asked about the future story arc, Mr. Graves revealed the following, "Well, the upcoming arc is all about the fall-out from the first arc. I realized that while the Invincibles story arc was complete, there were a lot of loose ends and new directions. I really want to explore what the DFG universe looks like in a post-Nepto, post-Spymaster age. To this end I came up with the idea that Spy Comics Presents... should, at least for the next arc, be a team-up book that showcases our many under-utilised characters. Nova is our August hero. Nova was created in the early 1980's by Dan Graves in order to introduce a female superheroine into the DFG lineup. "It really was a male dominated company in those days," recalled the DFG Publisher and Founder, "Nova was to be introduced in the first never-published Spy Comics annual in 1983 or 84. That annual never came together, although she did appear in her civilian identity in another unpublished story, which was to follow the annual." According to Mr. Graves she was to have assumed the civilian identity of Kim Kane and begun work as secretary to Carnage City Gazette editor-in-chief, J.S. Frederickson, who was also Julius Smithers' boss. "Dan was getting a little ahead of himself in those days," recalled co-publisher Darryl Andrews, "he was great at drawing advance covers and cover concepts, but a bit slow on doing interior stories and art. As a result Nova appeared on several covers, but never on any inside stories. She was also to appear in the unpublished Invincibles mini-series of 1983." When asked about Nova, DFG enthusiast Javier Santamotzarello commented, "She really was one of the characters always lurking in the background of the golden-age of DFG but never really making it to the front page, like Nepto, Spymaster and Redman. I have several early sketches that I picked up at conventions. Perhaps my most prized possession is the unpublished cover for the original Spy Comics #13 which was to feature the marriage of Spymaster and Nova." Dan Graves remembered this cover, "Yes, it was all a bit absurd... for some reason I thought that Nova would be a good love interest for the Spymaster. I can't recall my reasoning anymore. That cover (which featured the Spymaster in top hat and tails marrying a wedding-dress clad Nova) was just absurd." Mr. Graves revisited that story in Retro-Spy #2, last year, which featured the first appearance of Nova since the early 1980's. In that story it was revealed that she was an alien from another dimension who was brought back to earth by the Invincibles and joined their team. Spy Comics Presents #1 (2006) revealed that she had since returned to her own dimension and homeworld. "She didn't make it into either the 1985 or the 1996 relaunch," said Darryl Andrews, "and so I was absolutely flabergasted when Dan brought her back for the Retro-Spy issue, and even more surprised to see her appearances in recent issues of Spy Comics Presents!" Regardless of her inauspicious early days, it looks like our favourite heroine from another dimension, who still has a crush on Julius Smithers, is back to stay. Watch for future appearances in upcoming DFG Comics titles!

Pencilled Pages of Spy Comics Presents #5 Leaked!

Pencilled artwork by Dan Graves for pages 1 & 2 of Spy Comics Presents The Invincibles #5 has been leaked to the press! The images were posted earlier today by DFG webmaster Oscar Foodlecollins after being handed to him by an unnamed source. The source is likely DFG janitor Ernest Wontellalie, who has been known to leak material in the past and has been disciplined for such indescretions. DFG enthusiast Javier Santamotzarello commented on the leaked pages: "It looks like Dan Graves is continuing the theme from issue four in which the inner psychologies of Julius and Nepto are explored in parallel while the main story unfolds." Spy Comics Presents the Invincibles #5 is to be the conclusion of the current story arc, so the fact that pages have been leaked is significant as DFG has been trying strenuously to keep the details of this issue under wraps. Neither of Dan Graves nor Darryl Andrews, DFG's co-publishers, could be reached for comment.

CCI: Continuing our interview, I would like to ask you about Captain Nepto's changing outfits. I'm trying to catalogue them all, but I've lost count. It seems to have started with the wig, and then there was the closet full of costumes in Spy '96 #1. I've never known a hero to have so many looks? And any chance for a special Captain Nepto fashion showcase issue?
DTA: Nepto has always been searching for "who he is". I suppose the ever-changing wardrobe is a sympton of that. Captain Nepto Prime August will address this and no to the silly question.

CCI: Tell me about Captain Nepto's "powers."
DTA: I'll explain this in two parts. Nepto has temporary "super-powers" that he obtains, mostly by accident, from the scientist Zed. "Captain Nepto Prime" July is a perfect example of this [Nepto is zapped by some strange instrument in Zed's lab and can fly]. This was absent from the original series as Zed was working behind the scenes. Please read past and upcoming issues in the Retro-Spy series to learn the whole history. The second part of this answer is that Captain Nepto possesses no "powers", super or otherwise.

CCI: What led to the decision to end the 1981-1984 series and start again by consolidating both Spymaster & Nepto into Spy Comics vol. 2, #1, in 1985?
DTA: By 1985, both Dan's and my stories and art had developed to the point that the earliest issues looked like "chicken-scratch". I was working the 'new look' into the original series, when Dan decided to 'submarine' his entire first series and start new. He suggested we publish under one title so the issue would be more substantial [meaning maybe 10 pages instead of 5]. The second aspect of this was, we were actively selling the comics at this time and two heroes in one book served to encourage and actually spike sales. Spy-Comics vol.2, #3, for example, had three print runs and actually made us a tidy profit at the time.

CCI: Why do you seem to want to kill Captain Nepto?
DTA: I do want to 'kill' Nepto. I've already expanded on this in part one of the interview, but I will say that as an older person I find it difficult to accept the Nepto Legacy. He absolutely makes no sense to me. I'm an orderly person now....and Nepto does not make sense. It reaches far back to the original series when I was writing stories on a panel to panel basis not knowing or having any sort of conclusion. That's why we have the earlier asked, "super-powers' question. Let me explain it in simple, real salt of the Earth language. The name..., Captain Nepto came about because there was an advertisement for Captain Crunch cereal that I was able to trace for the cover of Captain Nepto #1. Nepto was supposed to be Neptune, but I couldn't remember how to spell Neptune at the time..plus I had run out of space on the cover[!]. I didn't know what he was even going to look like until page 2. With that kind of poor planning, is it any question why I want to kill this character?
Okay, so I do love the character now, but you still see why I have to "kill" him, right?

CCI: Okay, amongst Cap's enemies, who is a) your favourite, b)the most dangerous, c)the most overused, d)the most underused, and e)the biggest mistake (i.e., you would not invent him the second time around)?
DTA: My favourite is Killer Shark. Cool name, cool costume and first enemy created. The most dangerous would be the Mummy. I mean, how do you stop the un-dead? The most overused on first appearance would be the Jester, but when you examine those appearances, every one has a vital place in the canon. The guy just won't go away; even our holiday Retro-Spy Christmas Special marks an appearance with the Jester. If the appearances were lame and unmemorable, then fine I'd say him, but I can't, so I won't. Therefore no enemy, in my opinion has been overused. The most underused is easier. I'd say, the Sea-Serpent. Look, he makes a big comeback in the important Prime series, but what will anybody remember about the June issue....the super scientific Nepto Sub.
They are 'all my children', I love them all, so I would not call one a mistake.

CCI: You have also created several other heroes... I believe that the Warrior, the Winged Avenger, the Savage Beast, and Nightmare were all your creations. You officially created Cyclone & Tornado, although Todd Abbot claims that it was actually him. I guess what I'm asking is two-fold: first, to your mind, what makes a hero? And secondly, why do some creations work and others do not?
DTA: What is it that makes someone a hero? Is it great bravery? Superior intellect? A noble heart? Maybe A hero has all these things, But what makes him a hero Is more than that. It's using his fortune and destiny, To help those whom fate has not smiled on so kindly. It's his compassion and reverence, for the quality of life that all people deserve. It's knowing that but for his circumstances, He is no better or worse than those he seeks to help. Heroes are all around us in everyday life. They do what must be done.... Even if their deeds go unnoticed, And their praises go unsung. For true heroism is selfless and does not seek recognition. But we have heard its name and know its face when we see it. As for your second part of that question...., I have no idea.

CCI: Aside from Nepto, which other hero that you created is your favourite?
DTA: One doesn't really have a warm spot for me over the next. Because of limited development to date; I really don't have much invested in those characters. I will say, that my next favourite hero is The Spy-Master. I've always thought Dan came up with a great character and that's why early in the original series I started using Spy-Master in a guest role. I'm sure that Prof. Martin R. Schoedel, the official DFG historian, would be able to tell you, that I was responsible for the Spy-Master's first signs of physicality in the series as Dan was focusing on greater mental challenges for his character to be more in line with his age and orgin. I was overly excited and wanted the Spy-Master to "kick-butt" and in hindsight shouldn't have opened up that element. Even as recent as the year 2000, I was toying with the idea of doing a DFG comic strip featuring a rough n' tumble Spy-Master, showing no signs of crime fighting at an advanced age. I think honestly, I was only going to do it to stir Dan's ownership of the character into possibly making a return to the books as this was a dormant period for us. Still, the character has endured and I'm only too happy to have some small measure of influence on it.

CCI: You introduced a couple of new storylines in Spy '96 that never wrapped up, as the second story arc of the series was never finished. Can we expect to see some resolution here? And if so what are your plans for Divine, Nightmare, and The Executioner?
DTA: Spy '96 never wrapped up since by then I was working completely without support. The DFG regulars were all busy with other projects [-ie meaning life] and I couldn't sustain it myself. I did have big plans for those characters. Presently, I have no plans for those characters.

CCI: If DFG could launch one new title of your absolute choosing, what would it be?
DTA: I'm very pleased with the number of titles and the variety of titles we have on our slate. Each title is unique and exists to serve all our characters in whatever part of their development well. if I had to add one title it would be a solo book to focus on the development of Red-man. I think he has enough substance to warrant his own series. But, I've thought that for some time. Back in 1996, when I served as President of DFG; he was the character from the original series I reintroduced and immediately make an impact with. Dan was at a sticking point with Spy-Comics and well,...real life was getting in the way of his continuing with the comics, but I thought maybe Red-man would offer him some temporary relief and he could do a "one-off" just to end his draught. It didn't happen in 1996, but obviously I was correct about "setting the itch" as Dan responded years later with the continuation of the Retro-Spy storyline. I really think by Dan completing that story arc, it was a necessary component to revitalizing the entire company.

CCI: What would be the ideal DFG merchandising product?
DTA: A super scientific Nepto Sub!

CCI: What has been your favourite day at DFG?
DTA: I remember a BBQ. No drawing or scripting, just Dan, I and family. We'd talk about life, we'd talk about the characters in our comics. It was 'all' there...and juicy burgers.

Captain Nepto JUNIOR?!?!?! Captain Nepto Prime August Sneak Peak

"What the devil is Darryl Andrews up to?" asked a furious Todd Abbot this morning as he stormed into DFG Corporate Head Office with a petition signed by at least 4 people demanding that Darryl Andrews not go ahead with the direction-change planned for Captain Nepto Prime August Issue. "Todd doesn't run DFG," said Dan Graves, DFG's President and Co-Publisher. "Darryl Andrews has been my business partner for 27 years and whatever Darryl does with Nepto is fine with me. I won't be bullied by some second-rate ghost artist who thinks he has some claim on the Captain Nepto mythos." Mr. Graves' comment was uncharacteristically antagonistic. "Well Todd's being antagonistic," said Mr. Graves, "and I won't be dictated to about the direction of one of my flagship titles." Earlier today Mr. Abbot leaked the picture, below, which depicts a scene from Captain Nepto Prime August in which Cap appears to be introducing a junior sidekick. "It's not what it seems," said Mr. Andrews, "In fact, the whole issue is full of surprises!" Asked about Mr. Abbot's outburst of protest, Mr. Andrews commented, "Todd's just frustrated because he's not a visionary. But rest assured, we have very special plans for Todd in the DFG universe. Look for his new project to be announced soon. I'm just hoping this whole thing cools off so that we can move forward. It's really getting out of control." Rare Darryl Andrews Convention Art Donated to Canadian Museum of Cartoon Arts

A rare piece of Darryl Andrews convention artwork has surfaced. The piece, entitled, "Decision 2000 - To Begin Again?" was drawn at the 2000 Carnage City Comicon by the Captain Nepto creator for a fan who wished to remain anonymous. Reached for comment, Mr. Andrews said, "It was drawn during one of DFG's dormant periods. Dan and I were considering a relaunch but other areas in our lives were quite full and it never happened." Prof. Martin R. Schoedel, the official DFG historian who holds several graduate degrees, including two in panelology, commented on the work's significance, "The work is significant for several reasons. First, Nepto is drawn with a full mask, but no wig evoking his early, but not earliest golden-age appearance. Yet, he is also sporting his new capeless look, from the third series, and with the signature trident isignia which was prominent in the second series. It seems that Mr. Andrews was trying to evoke a sense of old and new in a profound way and was obviously toying with some aspect of nostalgia and a vision of looking forward. It might even suggest an early wrangling with the concepts that we are now seeing fully developed in the new Captain Nepto Prime series! Secondly, the pictures on the table are of classic Nepto villains, the Jester, Blaster, Mummy, Alligator, and possible the Unknown Strangler (or maybe Death). What is important to note in this is that Andrews was considering returning to the one shot Nepto vs. villains stories, again of the earlier years... the kinds of stories that were told only sparingly during the Spy '96 series. Finally, it is significant because it a mixed media piece -- a mixture of pencil only and pen and ink... very rare in the corpus of Andrews convention art." Once this reporter woke up after that ponderous interview, he consulted renowned DFG collector Javier Santamotzarello on the works value. "I would suggest that at today's market, if the work were to sell at auction, I would expect nothing less than at least $15,000, given the work's significance!" However, it is unlikely that the work will be sold, as the anonymous collector has donated it for display in the permanent DFG exibit at the Canadian Museum of Cartoon Art.

July Hero - The Agent

Our July Hero is The Agent. The Agent has had long history as a character that goes back to the early days of DFG. In issue 5 of the 1981 Spy Comics series, The Agent made his first appearance along with his Legion of Justice. This legion consisted of Julius Smithers (the Spymaster in his civilian identity), Chief Smith, Sgt John Smith (the Chief's younger brother), J.S. Frederickson (Publisher of the Carnage City Gazette, and Julius Smithers' boss) and a stool-pigeon named Jack. The Agent was a sort of illusionist who could appear and disappear into thin air. This was the fate of the series, too, as it vanished into obscurity by the mid-1980's. A new series, with an all-new Agent was planned in the late 1980's (see art, above) but never got off the ground. It was to be written by Dan Graves & Darryl Andrews, pencilled by Graves, Inked by Andrews and coloured by DFG wannabe colourist Arthur Kullerblind. Unfortunately, Mr. Kullerblind vanished, never to be seen again, shortly after he turned in the above artwork. This led to the rumour that a curse was associated with the character. These rumours proved to be unfounded though, as the Agent finally saw the light of day in Spy 96 #2. He played a prominent role in that series and continues to be a crucial member of The Invincibles team currently appearing in Spy Comics Presents. Darryl Andrews is widely known as the creator of Captain Nepto, "Canada's Favourite Adventure Strip Character Since 1981." However, he is also one of the guiding lights of DFG Comics, having been part of its life since its inception. Mr. Andrews granted us this rare interview over martinis just moments before the gala dinner and ball at the recent Iqualuit Comicon, in which he was inducted into the Nunavut Comic Book Hall of Fame.

CCI: Mr. Andrews it is pleasure to have this opportunity to discuss your career in the comic industry. How does it feel to be receiving this prestigious award?

DTA: I'm grateful for the award, but typically awards are reserved for the end of careers. I've got lot's of new found energy and stories to tell. I feel more creative then I did even back in the 1980's when DFG was at it's strongest!

CCI: You were in on the ground floor of DFG... Could you describe those early days.

DTA: I remember reading Dan's first comic [Spy #1] when I visited from Newmarket and was so jealous. He was excited about getting to work on #2 and I told him to go ahead; that I would work on a comic on my own so that we would each have a comic-book. Side by side that day we completed a few pages of what is now Spy-Comics #2 and Captain Nepto #1!!

CCI: When you created Captain Nepto it was originally under the DTA imprint. Can you describe how DTA came under the DFG banner?

DTA: Since we were working side by side on the comics and enjoying sharing with each other our creations; we wanted to advertise each other's comic in our own comic. Being extremely intelligent eleven year olds, we realized that this was considered a no-no in the comic business or any other business for this matter so we solved the problem the best way we knew how...we decided to publish under one banner. The decision to use DFG was quick as I simply felt that Dan was the pioneer and deserved the acknowledgement. In a serious note, working together under one banner has strengthened our friendship as we both feel very responsible to the entity known as DFG Comics.

CCI: Can you speak a little bit about your creative process. By this I mean, how does a Captain Nepto comic come together?

DTA: Sometimes it's a one line plot that I draw basic panels and fill in the rest of the story. Other times it's a very long process that requires revisiting a plot a number of times to find some sort of plausible ending.

CCI: What has surprised you most during your 25+ years in the industry?

DTA: How much of myself I can see in the character of Captain Nepto. Also, the passion and fun Dan and I have when we get together and plot these character's lives. We really care about our creations and feel very responsible about telling their stories.

CCI: Okay... Everyone wants to know... Why did you originally draw Captain Nepto with a wig?

DTA: My art was terrible. I mean terrible. I knew Dan didn't like it, but he was still excited about seeing new stories. The wig was my attempt at adding detail to the art. Detail...can you believe it? Anyways, later it became a protective piece of armour to save Nepto from head injuries.

CCI: Describe your relationship with Dan Graves.

DTA: Dan is the model of a true friend. People make choices that others tend to judge and assume the role of those choices as if they had made them. This often causes trouble in relationships since the support system is disrupted. I have always appreciated Dan for his friendship and support of my decisions regardless of whether or not they have seen to be sound decisions at the time. He is also a very kind, generous man who shares my love and passion for comics. I have no idea why he chose a con like me for a friend.

CCI: What's "Dan's Hell-hole?"

DTA: Dan's Hell-hole was an "in-office" lampoon of life at DFG headquarters. It was a good-natured poke at Dan and the DFG leadership team. It made it look like DFG was an absolutely horrible place to work, which of course it isn't. It was all in good fun. I'm not ashamed of it, although I think that all the copies have been destroyed. I don't know who drew it, but I think it might have been Todd Abbot.

CCI: Aside from Nepto, what has been your most enduring creation?

DTA: Carnage City. On a separate afternoon, visiting Dan again in Richmond Hill, we began at the beginning of the Dictionary and went word for word through it looking for a city to base our heroes in. At the top of my list was Carnage. Dan agreed with the name and we've used it ever since. I'm half surprised that Frank Miller didn't steal it for his graphic novel. That's American's for you....too dumb to read Canadian comics!

CCI: How has it been working with Todd Abbot again?

DTA: I love Todd. I hate Todd. I'm happy he's around to quickly get out some stories...and I do like some of his new Nepto stuff....I guess I just have to submit and realize that he's always going to be a big part of the Nepto legend.

CCI: What can you tell us about the change of direction that we are going to see in the August issue of Captain Nepto Prime?

DTA: Since issue one I've tried to kill Nepto. It's true. I think the measure of a hero is how many times he can face the greatest adversity and still continue. In the August Prime I've penned my greatest tale to date. I'm really going to do my best to destroy everything about the character and leave only a broken David Anderson.

CCI: What can you tell us about future projects at DFG?

DTA: There will be more Spy Classics, Retro-Spy, Annuals and a lot from the back catalogue being re-issued.

CCI: Can you describe some of your corporate duties at DFG head office?

DTA: My top job is to bring an increased awareness to the company. I am actively trying to build our readership to new heights.

With Captain Nepto Prime July almost ready for release, focus has heated up on the numerous rumours circulating about the August release. We are happy to report here first that there is indeed major changes in this issue, notwithstanding the combined efforts of both Todd Abbot and series creator Darryl Andrews in regards to all breakdowns and pencils. Darryl will be doing all the finishings to the drawings but will don the penciller title for the first time this Century! Confirmed also is that the story will feature Captain Nepto from both the 1980 and 1990 periods[!]. Mr. Andrews was quite silent when asked how one singular story can feature a Nepto from separate time periods but added, "It will all make sense...everything will make sense". CCI: There is a wealth of characters from the old SPM Comics line that you purchased back in 1982 that have not been utilized to date. Will the fans ever get a chance to see these characters in the new continuity?
DFG: Absolutely. We have big plans for these characters. Watch for their return as early as Spy Comics Presents #4. They will play a part in the current "Battle of the Invincibles" storyline, which concludes in #5. Following #5, the format is changing to that of a "team-up" book. Look for your favourite SPM characters to appear in some of these team-ups!

CCI: Please describe the DFG decision to move from Newstand sales to Online Publishing.
DFG: Well, DFG likes to be on the cutting edge of things. We are continuing to print a limited number of paper copies for our long-time subscribers, but we are indeed shifting to a mainly online format. What can I say, it's the way of the future!

CCI: How do you see the DFG website expanding in the near future?
DFG: One of the things that I intend to introduce is more Annuals and Special Editions. We always promised annuals back in the old days, but were rarely able to deliver. The Spy Classics Annual will be ready for the fall, and as mentioned in the previous interview, we are planning a Retro-Spy Christmas Special featuring the Invincibles that I hope will become an annual DFG tradition. Some time ago I announced a funny animal book, Captain Nepto and His Furry Friends. Many people thought I was joking, but I was really quite serious. We need something for our younger readers.

CCI: Who's your favourite Captain Nepto Villain and why?
DFG: I always like Dr. Tequilia -- it's all about the name.

CCI: Is Peter Repovski coming back to DFG? Certainly the response to Spy Classics must've been huge...?
DFG: Yes, the fans are clamouring for more of Pete's work! Peter is a very busy independent business man. He does have a cover on his drawing board that he is hoping to ink in the near future. But he has so many constraints on his time. Pete's always welcome to contribute to DFG pending his availability.

CCI: Did you gain special permission to use DC's Robin back in the 1996 run?
DFG: That wasn't Robin. It's ashame that the Spy '96 Annual was never released. It was all to be explained there. I do think it needs to be clarified, though. This is the story... An orphaned street kid who looked up to The Agent decided that he wanted to be The Agent's sidekick. He stole a Robin costume from a local costume store, dressed up in it and started tagging along with The Agent, although he tried to discourage him. Immediately, The Agent told him that he couldn't wear a Robin costume because he would be infringing DC's copyright so they bought some colour dyes changed the colours of the costume and changed the "r" logo to a "b" logo for Budgie. That's right, the character was actually called "Budgie." You can't really tell the colour change, though, because we were only publishing in black in white back in the 1990's. Sadly, Budgie died in the Spy '96 Annual. The By the way, Frank Daniels is still working tying all the fragmentary artwork for the Spy '96 Annual together and his hoping to have it released by Christmas.

CCI: Are you planning on doing a solo hero title again?
DFG: Personally, no. Trying to run a company with over 100 staffers, all its subsidiaries, and write and draw a regular title (Spy Comics Presents), plus issues of Spy Classics and Retro-Spy means that I can't take on a solo series right now. However, DFG will be launching a new Redman book soon. The release date and creative team are yet to be announced. I'm hoping that maybe Darryl Andrews might want to take it on. He's much better with solo character books than me and he has a real passion for Redman. Redman was, of course, a key character in the 1981 Spy Comics run, but I decided not to bring him back for the '85 relaunch. He also remained absent for the '96 relaunch. However, Darryl liked the character and drew some pin-ups and next thing you know he was co-starring with Nepto in Retro-Spy #1 (1996). That helped me to see the potential for the character and made me realize that he really is DFG's "heavy-hitter." When I relaunched again in 2006 I made him an integral part of the Invincibles. I can assure once the current story arc is over, that Redman will emerge as the most important senior hero of the DFG universe!

CCI: How would you describe your art style? Any major influences?
DFG: My style has gone through many changes. I would say that generally, I have settled on a simple 1950's style with thick lines, deco-style shapes, and semi-cartoonish faces with exaggerated features. I try to draw each character consistently using a particular caricature so that you always know exactly who you're looking at. This is especially important in a multi-cast book like Spy Comics Presents. I suppose my influences include any of the Bob Kane ghosts (Jerry Robinson, George Rousseau, Sheldon Moldoff, Dick Sprang, etc), but not Kane himself; and of course I am a great fan of both Eisner and Caniff. In terms of recent artists, I am a fan of most of Darwyn Cooke's work.

CCI: Is it true that DFG published a limited edition 12 month calendar featuring the ugliest DFG girls as a lampoon?
DFG: Absolutely not.

CCI: What is Dan's Hell-hole and why has nobody seen it?

CCI: Who is DFG's Strongest Hero?
DFG: Without a doubt, Redman. Nova seems to have untapped power as well. Glow Girl is also quite powerful.

CCI: Which super villain do you think is the most dangerous?
DFG: They are all dangerous, that's why their called SUPER villains, silly.

CCI: Is there a character in the DFG Universe that you're just about sick of seeing?
DFG: I think that the Jester has probably been overused. Darryl featured him in just about every other issue of the original (1981) Captain Nepto series. He wasn't seen again in the 1985 series, and played a very low profile in the '96 series (in Spy '96 #3, I believe). Todd Abbot brought him back in Spy Classics #1 (1996), and Darryl & Todd used him in the first issue of Captain Nepto Prime this year. At the same time, he has been appearing in current time in Spy Comics Presents. Since he "reformed" he has been serving as mayor of Carnage City and has now been elected leader of the National Party to replace the assassinated Prime Minister Randy Anderson. This means he's just about to be sworn in as PM! After the current arc is done, he will be featured regularly in current continuity in his new role. Is this too much Jester? I suppose the answer could be "yes," however, like Julius Smithers, he has dropped his costumed persona and taken on a new role. We are getting to explore a different side of him. He is crucial to our current exploration of human nature in the DFG universe. In the real world we are always electing criminals to public office, but in the DFG universe we are taking this to a new level... what if we were to elect super-criminals to public office... and what is the difference here between what we actually do and what is being done in our comics?!

CCI: Is there a company policy on the degree of violence that can be portrayed in the comics?
DFG: I think off-screen violence is better than on screen violence. It leaves more to the imagination. We judge each situation on a case-by-case basis. We try to be a family company.

June Villain - Killer Shark

Owning the distinction of being DFG's first costumed super villain, Killer Shark has had a very successful run in the DFG Universe. Appearing in costume in the original 1981 Captain Nepto series and later without costume in the 1985 & 1996 Spy Comics series. Killer Shark gained great notoriety when it was revealed that he was responsible for setting up the 'hit' on Captain Nepto's parents. Every appearance has been laced with serious attempts to kill Captain Nepto in part to rid himself of the entire 'Captain Nepto Clan'. A future showdown no doubt exists between Killer Shark, Captain Nepto and the Sea Serpent!! Superheroes are everywhere these day; in print, in film and as toy/food tie-in promotions at your favourite fast food restaurants. Daniel F. Graves is the President of the Canadian Small Press Juggernaut, DFG Comics. We were granted an exclusive interview, over breakfast, at Toronto's Fairmount Royal York Hotel to discuss the comic book industry and, more specifically, the present day goings-on at DFG Comics Corporate Head Office.

CCI: Thanks for meeting with us.
DFG: I must say, it is always a pleasure to do these interviews. Of the thousands that I've done over the past two decades, I've always enjoyed interviews with your esteemed publication.

CCI: With 25+ years of DFG comics in the DFG canon, do you have any intention to slow down?
DFG: Absolutely not! DFG Comics, and its subsidiaries are a lifetime passion and labour of love. As I've said in the past, one of the great things about DFG publications and productions is that they occur in "real time." Unline many of our competitors, and especially those south of the border, 25 years of DFG comics is 25 years of real time. That's why the Spymaster and Nepto have aged; that's why we've introduced a whole new generation of heroes; and that's why the DFG universe will forever remain full of surprises.

CCI: Has the success of DFG Comics surprised you?
DFG: Not really... I always knew we had something great on our hands. That's why we we've been able to outlast so many small presses, and as an aside, why we were able to acquire other small presses over the years. We're simply the best. I mean, come on, who has a hero like Captain Nepto in their stable. He can do most anything, fly, swing on a rope when he's tired of flying, go deep sea in that super-scientific sub of his, and don't get me started on the wig -- can you tell me any other company who has a superhero known for his wigs? Fanbloodytastic, I say.

CCI: The Spymaster has greatly evolved over the years, what's your personal favourite period?
DFG: My all-time favourite Spymaster period is the early-eighties, when his character and identity were just forming. He started out a bit grim, but eventually took on a more mainstream, brighter persona. I mean, falling in love with Nova, a voluptuous woman from another dimension? That's hardly grim and gritty, yet that period had a charm of its own. In the mid-eighties when I went dark with him again -- a period I also like very much -- I think we lost something, particularly his connection to the rest of the DFG universe. That was what was so great about the early period. He and Nepto were the two lead characters, and Darryl seemed to have them teaming up, all chummy and buddy-buddy every other issue or so. In the recent years I've tried to catch that flavour of he and Nepto remaining the leaders of the DFG stable of heroes. In Spy '96 they had one final team-up and in the recent story-arc, he and Nepto are adversaries as they have come to represent very different perspectives on what it means to lead the next generation of DFG heroes. I suppose when it comes down to it, I really prefer the Spymaster out of costume, as Julius Smithers. I feel that Julius has grown beyond the Spymaster role and has become the elder statesman of the DFG universe. Again, this is the result of naturally ageing our characters. You can't have a 70 year old running around in a costume.

CCI: Is there any particular storyline you would like to change?
DFG: Absolutely not. I am dead-set against retcons (retroactively changing continuity -- ed.). Some of our competitors take great pride in changing the origins and history of their characters every second month or so. If it's in the DFG canon, it's in the DFG canon! Period! However, I'm not opposed to going back and adding details here and there -- things that were not revealed the first time around that can be nicely added without contradicting old continuity. I made a mistake early in my career as a comic book creator and attempted to do that with the Spymaster. Faithful DFG readers will know that he has two different origins, one from the original Spy Comics series (1981-84), and one from the 1985 series. In the first series he gets amnesia and becomes a criminal called the Swift Mugger. When his memory returns he becomes the Spymaster in order to right his wrongs. In 1985, his wife is killed and he becomes the Spymaster to exact revenge and track down her killer. I have long wanted to resolve this discrepency and will be doing so in Spy Comics Annual #1 (the origin issue) due out later this summer. I can assure you that neither origin will be contradicted or wiped out! Those who are faithful to either version will be happy with the result, I think.

There are many things that I could regret doing. For example, the Radiation Master is probably the silliest villain ever created, but instead of ignoring him, I think that he has a great place in the DFG universe as a "loser villain." We can make gold out of whatever old crap we might find in the canon!

CCI: What's you favourite cover and why?
DFG: I always loved the Spymaster/Nova wedding cover from the original Spy Comics series. It was just so silly. I never drew the inside story until last year when I did the story for Retro-Spy #2. Instead of having them actually get married, it was just a hook to draw in the reader and serve as the plot point on which the Invincibles come to be! Other favourites include the very first cover Spy Comics #1 (1981) cover, which I redrew for #1 of the second series (1985). I'm planning on doing it again, with a twist. I always loved Darryl Andrews' cover for Captain Nepto #1 (1981) and have recently recreated it for Spy Classics #3! My other favourite is Captain Nepto (original series) #9 from 1984 (the last issue of the original series) that Flora just coloured as part of our collectors' series.

CCI: Have you had any experience with the big American publishers like Marvel or DC trying to cherrypick some of DFG's talent?
DFG: Repovski did some work for Dark Horse, but that was with my blessing, of course. I never want to hold anyone back from following their dreams. If working for DC or Marvel is their dream, well then let them go, I say. The truth is, most of our creators love DFG so much that you couldn't pay them enough to work anywhere else!

CCI: Does DFG still obtain all filming rights or are some characters already optioned for possible film productions?
DFG: We are very protective of our film rights. As you know, DFG has its own production studio and has done several television series and big-screen films (as well as some made for TV films). Perhaps our biggest success was the Bates & Holden TV series. This is one example where the film characters made the transition to the comic page. This is why we retain all rights -- it's called synergy, my friend. If we let the rights go, then we can't capitalize on such cross-over possibilities. Another area that we will be moving into is toy production. Watch for DFG Action Figures Series One which will be hitting toy stores for Christmas. Figures will include the golden age Spymaster, Nepto, Redman, the original Sy Clopps, Killer Shark, the Blaster, and the Radiation Master.

CCI: Would you like to be the 'Stan Lee' of DFG with walk-ons in every movie?
DFG: What? Are you kidding me? Haven't you seen any of our films? I'm in every one of them! I was doing that before Stan Lee even thought of the idea. And by the way, missy, I have much more substantial roles that Mr. Lee.

CCI: You have two brothers, yet neither has produced a comic...any reason for that?
DFG: They can't draw. But they are award-winning actors. Again, watch the movies.

CCI: Which villain is your favourite?
DFG: The original Sy Clopps. You'll understand why next year when the 2009 Spy Classics Annual #2 finally tells his origin. If you want a hint, check out the Sylvester Clopps family photo posted elsewhere on this page. I've also recently developed a real soft-spot for the Radiation Master, just because he's so absurd. I mean, the guy has no head!

CCI: Which character do you think has the greatest potential that to date remains a secondary character?
DFG: Freddy.

CCI: Tell me a little about the upcoming finale of Spy Comics Presents The Invincibles.
DFG: It will all wrap up in Issue #5. While it is a battle between Julius' team and Nepto's team, it really is the culmination of the psychological battle between Julius and Nepto. It will set the stage for the next major era of the DFG universe, changing it forever.

CCI: In terms of sales, which DFG title is the most successful? The most popular?
DFG: Spy Comics Presents and Captain Nepto Prime seem to always go head-to-head in sales, with Spy Classics coming third and Retro-Spy in fourth.

CCI: Spy Classics is one of my favourite titles , what can fans expect to see in the upcoming year?
DFG: Well, you know about the "all-origins" annual, and I've mentioned plans for next years' all-villains origin annual. Issue three retells Captain Nepton #1 (from 1981) and includes story and art by Andrews, Repovski and myself. I'd like to retell the first Cap/Spymaster team-up... watch and see!

CCI: Any plans for a special Christmas Holiday edition?
DFG: Oh yes, you must be psychic. It will actually be an issue of Retro-Spy and will take place in DFG Golden-age period. It will be entitled, "The Invincibles Save Christmas!"

CCI: Are you and Todd Abbot friends?
DFG: No.

CCI: Describe your best day.
DFG: Every day is a great day at DFG!

DFG President Comments on Todd Abbot Letter

"I was shocked..." were the words of DFG president and co-publisher, Dan Graves, earlier today when asked to comment on a letter by Todd Abbot, posted on the DTA Comics website (click here for the text of the letter), in which Mr. Abbot claimed that Captain Nepto Prime was coming to and end after only four issues and that he had been reassigned to other work. "After all that we went through to get Prime up and running and honour his contribution to the early Captain Nepto era, I'm really quite frustrated that he continues to grand-stand like this," said Mr. Graves. Mr. Graves was, of course, referring to the drawn out-legal battle with Mr. Abbot after he registered the defunct DTA label, under which Captain Nepto had originated, and announced that he would launch his own classic Nepto series to compete with DFG's Captain Nepto Prime. Through the herculean efforts of Sir Milton Goldfarbstein, QC, DFG legal counsel, an agreement was reached to bring Abbot and DTA back into collaboration with DFG's Darryl Andrews. "We were moderately pleased with the results of the new series," added Mr. Graves, "but Todd came to me and said that he had other projects that he wanted to pursue. Being the stand-up fellow that I am, and being committed to offering the 'the best in Canadian comics,' Darryl and I brainstormed a new direction for Prime, thus allowing Todd to continue on other projects. What really frustrates me, though, is that Todd would make a public announcement before details have been confirmed. The media frenzy has been out of control and the phones ringing off the hook. Sometimes I just wish Mr. Abbot would keep his own counsel and leave the promtional work to our DFG professionals." Mr. Graves also took the opportunity to introduce DFG's newest staff member, their new publicist, Selina Silvurtungdevull, who will be handling such press releases in the future.

Spy Comics Presents the Invincibles #3: Ready for July 1 Release!

Word is just in from DFG corporate head office that Spy Comics Presents the Invincibles #3 is in press and due for release, July 1, 2008! Co-publisher Dan Graves noted, "We realize the issue #2 was released a bit late, but we're happy to say that #3, the summer issue, is on track!" Mr. Graves also noted that #4, the fall issue should be available about mid-September. Issue #3 features part three of the "Battle of the Invincibles" and co-stars Holden and Bates, Glow Girl, and the Grim Avenger as they attempt to stop the assassination of Norbert J. Jangle, the mayor of Carnage City (and the former villain, the Jester), at the hands of Captain Nepto and his renegade band of heroes.

"We're especially happy that the cover is a collaboration by DFG founders Dan Graves and Darryl Andrews," said DFG production manager, Frank Daniels. "When Captain Nepto Prime changed directions and was set at an earlier period of Cap's career, the original cover proposed for issue one of Prime, by Darryl Andrews, proved to be unusable, as the costume worn by Cap is from a later period of his career, and therefore anachronistic. However, Dan designed a cover for Spy Comics Presents... that incorporates Darryl's Nepto/Jester picture quite nicely. We're very pleased with the results."

The current story arc is set to run through Issue #5 (the winter issue).

Flora Lovartalot Does It Again!

Is there no end to this woman's talent? Flora Lovartalot, DFG's award-winning new colourist, has just turned in the completed artwork for the Redman origin story for the Spy Classics Annual #1 (Story, pencils and inks by Dan Graves). "It's fan-bloodytastic," said DFG co-publisher and vice-president, Darryl Andrews. "If Todd Abbot's not careful, she's going to displace him as DFG's resident comic book giant." A more subdued president and co-publisher, Dan Graves, noted, "Yeah, she's not bad, but she's no Jerry Serpe. I'm pleased with how her work is coming along. Hopefully she'll start to tone down some of the garrish colours she's using and get serious." Black & White Artwork for Redman Origin Unveiled!

Well, it's true...the Spy Classics Annual is indeed coming together! So far we've seen some preliminary work on the Andrews/Graves cover, the completed coloured artwork for the Flea origin story, and now, we can catch a glimpse at the b&w artwork for the Redman origin story. "I'm told that Flora is already working on the colouring of this story," noted DFG production manager, Frank Daniels. Mr. Daniels added, "We're really hoping that the whole issue can be ready and in press for a summer release. The Captain Nepto origin is complete and ready for colouring as well." Inside sources at DFG say that the inclusion of the Redman origin is timely given the fact that a Redman ongoing series is reputedly in the works. "I can't give any details on the Redman series," noted Mr. Daniels, "the creative team has not been established nor has the direction of the book. Suffice to say that Redman is DFG's 'powerhouse' character, and as field leader of The Invincibles, he deserves his own title. I'll also tell you that we have been having some preliminary discussions about Spy Classics Annual #2 (the 2009 Summer Annual) and Dan and Darryl are very intent on making it an 'all-villain' origin issue!" Spy Classic Annual #1 (Origin Issue) Coming Together!

"The Spy Classics Annual is coming together very nicely," says DFG President and Co-Publisher, Dan Graves. "I'm very pleased," he added, "That we will be able to include so many origin stories in the issue. Interest has risen since we released the teaser image online last week of the early-inking stage of the Graves/Andrews cover." The issue is slated to contain origin stories of DFG favourites such as The Spymaster, Captain Nepto, The Agent, Nova, Redman, The Bates/Holden team, The Warrior, and The Flea. A sneak-preview of The Flea origin story is posted here (story and art by Dan Graves).
